Speeding.
Sooo after moving from a city where I got hardly any tickets to a smaller town where i've gotten 3 in the same month I need to know how to avoid these speed traps. Like what's the best radar detector, or if thats even the best thing to use and whatnot. I was thinking of getting the whistler 78SE, from what I've read and was wondering if you guys use something better/different? And please don't say slow down because thats not an option. I know its not E9X related but I got them in my e92 if that counts

I have a sure-fire method: Don't speed.
I will never understand why speeding is even condoned. Track your car if you want to go fast. |

Should I be the first to say don't speed, nah.....
Start off learning about your area, be observant, learn the high likelihood areas for police, note all the doughnut shops, see where others get pulled over. Then speed intelligently. Use your head. Edit: Oh crap, somebody beat me to it. |

Speed Smart. Like said earlier, know where the cops sit, know where the speed cameras are (I live in AZ, cops here are terrible), if your speeding, be vigilant, scan ahead for la policia. But (Apart from a V1), just get lucky. It's helped me so far. There will always be that one cop around that blind corner waiting to get you. Luck and vigilance has saved me from at least 1 or 2 tickets.

Agreed. V1 takes the cake. The rest are....the rest.
Wrong! Laser jammers are illegal in: Nebraska, Minnesota, Utah, California, Oklahoma, Virginia, Colorado, Illinois and Washington DC. They are legal in the rest. FCC regulates radio (radar) transmissions, but laser is light, so they are legal unless the state says otherwise.

A few weeks ago I was traveling down a 4 lane divided highway going about 25 mph over the speed limit. There were no buildings for miles and I hadn't seen another car for maybe 10 miles. My V1 went off. I could see for a mile or more and I saw nothing....I topped a small hill and there were two highway patrol cars sitting in the trees with a radar gun hanging out of the window. I just strolled past with my cruise control set a couple of miles below the limit.
If you only drive to the post office a couple of times a month to pick up your check or just to church on Sunday....slow down, enjoy the day. If you have to cover a lot of ground in a short period of time or drive hundreds of miles a day and time is money....buy the V1

How is driving slow not an option? Seriously, if you move to a new place and speed from the get go without learning the area, you deserve those tickets.

You gotta be real. People don't buy BMWs and mod them to drive them slowly. You have the inner race car driver telling you pushing over the limit. Everyone in this board does.
If you are young, you will be less careful and more impulsive. That's normal. Don't tell him to grow up. You were in the same spot at that age. That's hypocritical. The real advise here is "be careful". Driving cars fast without the proper training or insight is dangerous for you, your passengers, other cars, and bystanders. Get to know the new area before you start pushing the limits. Be realistic and don't drive 25 MPH over a residential area. Do it on a empty road with lots of free space. If you really need to kill the "drive fast" bug frequently, then consider going to a race track where you can push the limits of your car under controlled environments. You can also participate in amateur races. If you do that often enough, then the need to speed in your everyday driving will diminish. I hope this helps. |

Despite all that amazingly, I am able to do everything to maximize safety while driving, like not swerving across lanes, cutting people off like a douche bag, running yellow lights, and god forbid ALWAYS USE MY TURN SIGNAL. Trying to blame your "inner racer" is like saying "its okay as long as you don't get caught". Right so let me go rob a bank because it's all okay as long as I "don't get caught". Quit trying to shirk your responsibility of making sure the road is safe for EVERYONE. You don't own the road, learn to share it. |
