Thumbs up Gumpert (7:11.5s) the new king of the ring

Corvette ZR1, Viper ACR. Never heard of them?

Well that might be me joking but with the Gumpert knocking a full 11 seconds off the closest of these two rivals they may as well be history. This car has single handily restored the natural order of things, that is that Europe make the best sportscars and America need to try harder.

Quote:
The Gumpert Apollo gains the lap record of the Nurburgring Driver Florian Gruber achieved this with 7:11.5 making this the fastest production road car round the Nurburgring
...

The impressive power of the high-performance eight cylinder engine is based on proven V8-high-performance aggregates from AUDI. In the standard configuration this engine is optimised for use in racing and road vehicles and produces 650HP as a Biturbo engine.

Weighing only 196 kg (432 lbs.), it plays a major role in ensuring the ideal weight and fascinating driving dynamics of apollo. An angle of 90° between the two cylinder banks is a sign of a classic 8-cylinder engine. Efficient utilisation of its remarkable energy in the back wheels guarantees the fully-synchronised, sequential six-speed transmission that incorporates Formula 1 know-how. The short gear paths allow high speed gear changes. The arrangement of the gears in a longitudinal direction in the path of travel ensures a very low centre of gravity and optimum weight distribution. The characteristic sound of the double-flow exhaust system of the apollo with its 3-way catalytic converters says it best – the apollo is pure, unbeatable performance as reflected in the data. Like a comet, the apollo catapults its pilot from 0 to 100 km/h (0-62 mph) in just 3.0 seconds and only requires 8.9 seconds from 0 to 200 km/h (0-124 mph)
And to add insult to injury, it's using an Audi engine as well.

Go Audi?

GTR is over-rated.

Now, ZR1 is just sick.

I love that car. It was always way up my list of "stupid money for a trackday car" cars.

It even looks slow when it's doing the lap:

Oh and before you Ameri-philes start jumping in saying it's not a road car etc. It's only as ridiculous as a Viper ACR.

Ah but beauty is in the eye of the beholder. It is what it is and doesn't pretend to be anything else.
And I'd take that over a pox green viper ACR any day.

Saw it in that Top Gear bit awhile back, and it sure seems to be a fully equipped street car, albeit a mildly frumpy but blindingly fast one. Too bad about the name, though.

Find many Ameri-philes on an M3 forum do you?

you must like the pontiac aztec as well. there is so many things that are just fundamentaly wrong with the design of that car. dont get me wrong, i respect it for being a great car mechanicaly...but i dont care how fast it is...the design is busted as fuck. just because it is functional, doesnt mean it has to be ugly

Normally it just takes a quick negative comment about the Viper or Corvette to get them flooding in on the defense.
Admittedly I made the word up but you got what I meant. I have to be careful. .

Unfortunately to get positive downforce you pretty much do have to be ugly.

Oooh. The Pontiac Aztec. Nice. How the hell did that get past the drawing stage never mind the clay model???? Someone actually signed off on that design.

P.S.
I don't think it looks any worse than the Viper ACR but that's not a compliment by any stretch. Both ugly as fuck with a purpose.

no, u do not, most ALMS cars are not ugly.

yeah gumpert hired the whole team from the aztec, lol...realisticaly...they probably just dont know anything about car design.

The Viper was designed by designers AND engineers...not a CAD specialist so, it is a complete design, everything works together. it looks good...the gumpert is a frankenstein...the only thing whole-istic about it is that is completely busted. it looks like an 8 year old drew it up.

this is not a personal attack on you, just that the car is ugly....there are so many supercars out there that are fugly, but no one realizes b/c they are shaped like a supercar.

i am a designer, i know what im talking about....if you want me to beak it down line by line....i will

I'm not taking it as an attack?
I do disagree that the ACR version of the viper looks any better though. It's just as ugly IMO. As a road car it's look idiotic as would any car with full race bodywork. You definitely wouldn't want to be the shy type in either

To be honest I've never put any relevance on anyone's opinion on the looks of a car as I think they are the most subjective part of the whole experience and one mans shite is another mans gold. You just need to look at how many of those Aztec they sold to realise that's true

Anyone on here know somebody that bought one????

im just saying the viper ACR is a good looking car with aero parts tacked on. the gumpert was ugly from the start, lol. its the difference between a car designed by experienced designers, and someone who is a design school reject.

The aero parts an the ACR are ugly...but that doesnt make the car underneath ugly.

No but you aren't looking at what's underneath and it's not like the parts are easily removable. Ooh. Now there's an idea for a business.

You need to see it in the flesh to see the quality of the fit and finish. It's fantastic and can't be knocked until you see one.

Secondly it was designed as a TRACK CAR that can be driven to the track and not a road car that can be used on the track so the shape was designed around that purpose and that purpose alone. It wasn't meant to look all nice like a Ferrari and as you can see by watching any videos or reading results they did a bloody good job of it. It does exactly what they wanted and incredibly well.

Road car designers are not race car designers Different priorities. It's over 10 secs faster round the ring than the ACR so they obviously know a little more about it then you or me.
