I was in a similar boat once during undergrad. I took a few semesters off and then returned suddenly after the financial aid deadlines passed and ended up covering a whole year at Michigan myself with private loans. When I think back to it there's one word I would use to describe it.... "Ouch"
As someone else has suggested, you've missed the FASFA deadline (June 30th) which will most likely eliminate a number of financial aid options unless there is some consideration for the late acceptance. I don't know of one but it's been a few years since I've looked so I may be wrong. While they may be waiting to "set something up with you" I'd suggest walking into the office on Monday and ask them what additional options are available to you above and beyond the standard FASFA, etc. If the campus isn't near you just pick up the phone. The primary problem is that most of the grants and work-study positions (research, teaching, etc) will almost certainly be filled by now. At that point you may be stuck with nothing more than loans. Now, loans aren't the end of the world but you had better make damn certain that you aren't picking up 20-30-40k in loans for a single year to study something like photography or golf management. |
