Damn he really did die.
Steve Irwin, the quirky Australian naturalist who won world-wide acclaim, was killed by a stingray barb through the chest on Monday while diving off Australia's northeast coast, emergency officials and witnesses said. "Steve was hit by a stingray in the chest," said local diving operator Steve Edmondson, whose Poseidon boats were out on the Great Barrier Reef when the accident occurred. "He probably died from a cardiac arrest from the injury," he said. http://tvnz.co.nz/view/page/411423/825836 |

The stingray barb that struck Steve Irwin would have been as deadly as a rifle bayonet driven into one of his vital organs, Australian wildlife filmmaker David Ireland said on Monday.

Steve Irwin KILLED!
I cannot believe it, he was only forty years old. It is very unfortunate that a shark dive cost him his life at such a young age. He was truly a great ambasador for Australia. I can only say i will always the man.

The world has lost one of its foremost conservationists. He was hovering over a ray who apparently became startled and flung its barb, located on top of the tail, directly into Steve's heart which would cause instant death. It was captured on film and happened on the Great Barrier Reef. God bless him.

Yeah, it sucks. He seemed like a really cool guy.... very passionate about his work and saving/helping animals.
You would think with all the dangerous stuff he does to be killed by a stingray (extremely rare as I gather) is really unlucky. |

Ive been watching him since i could remember, I remember when he had his first few episodes with his dad, now he haas his own zoo, and 2 kids and a wife, I grew up with him basically, when i was little croc files was all i would watch. I even dressed as the crocodile hunter one year...when i heard the news i couldnt beleive it, i still cant...i felt like i knew him even though he was across the globe...my deepest feelings go out to his wife and 2 kids, noone will forget this great person, he didnt have an evil bone in his body. he didnt deserve death by the creature he lived to protect. its sadly ironic.
R.I.P

Sorry to see him go.
But I will be honest, the first time I saw his show I said that he would eventually be killed. Still a sad loss.

he definitely started a new kind of documentaries. there are many that are trying to imitate him, but he was the original. i don't particularly enjoy this kind of entertainment but i definitely recognize his contribution to television and documentary-making.

Apparently, the incident was indeed caught on tape, though I doubt it will ever be shown to the public.
Stingrays are usually quite docile, and rarely use their barbs unless stepped on accidentally or attacked by sharks. Nonetheless, this shows that wildlife is often unpredictable and despite calculated precautions, can wreak havoc. This incident does sound a bit like a freak accident in which the ray was reportedly unprovoked, and of all places, Steve was nailed in the heart. He survived just long enough to pull the barb out. |
