I think a couple Chevy cars had an infrared/night vision option too. On a Cadillac/Corvette probably? Anyway, they had it where if you shut the car head lights off, it turned the night vision off too (to prevent the inevitable idiots who'd drive only by the night vision). This system also appears to do that (as the video shows putting the lights in auto-mode before turning system on).
One big difference is that I thought the Chevy version also did it via heads-up display which seems a lot better so you don't have to move your eyes so far from the road. Also you'd notice something lit up on the hud easier than you'd notice something on that lcd screen. To me, it still seems someone will start driving by that little lcd screen and watching that too much. (Yeah, yeah, I know...when DVD Nav systems came out people said it would distract people too much and cause more accidents, yada yada. But you don't drive by a nav screen, it's just something to focus your attention on at best/worst/whatever. But this system seems like people will look at it too often for driving.) Now if it was via HUD, now THAT I would be interested in. |

I agree, in the middle of the dash probably isn't ideal compared to HUD or right below your line of vision like the mercedes.
In Jeremy Clarkson's review of the benz he said your impulse is to just glance at it occasionally like a rear view mirror. |

They showed the S550's on Fifth Gear and they found that it really didn't give the driver THAT much more time to see someone walking in the dark, versus just using high-beam Xenons. They deamed it, to 'gimicky.'
