Interior Windshield Scratch

Hello all,

So I messed up… I was wiping my windshield and windows and suddenly saw this smudge on the windshield right above the steering wheel.

Only this smudge couldn’t be wiped off. Tried to scratch it off with my thumbnail and felt it…

I think that as I was wiping the interior glass down, my Apple Watch Ultra’s squared off titanium casing around the screen scratched it. I know I wasn’t pressing hard - at that angle, sitting in the drivers seat, it’s hard for me to really press into the glass.

I talked to a windshield repair guy and he told me the only bet is with jewelers rouge - but that’s highly risky for inexperienced people and will stain.

Quick google searches say there’s almost no way to fix the interior bc it’s so hard to apply pressure on anything requiring buffing out. Only way is to replace the full windshield

Anyway, anyone have experience with trying to remediate this? Is it possible?

But also, wanted to drop this little PSA on how easily windshields can scratch… I had no idea.

Thanks!

Wow, thank you for the heads up, as I also wear an Apple Watch Ultra.

I can’t tell from your photo, if the “dark” areas of the scratch are just shadowing from light refraction or if there was some sort of transfer from the watch to the glass when it collided. What’s your assessment of that? Is there something “in” the scratch?

Great question - I’m almost certain it’s shadow from light refraction - making it look worse than the actual damage.

There’s no sign of damage on the watch itself so I don’t think it’s transferred material. Apple’s not playing around with these titanium watch bodies. Kicked myself a bit as I used to have the SS Apple Watch, so a softer metal that is rounded off.

Do you think it's worth replacing the whole glass that is going to be expensive.

I feel it's one of those things where if you have severe OCD is going to bug the crap out of you for a while but then you won't even know that it's there

At least that's what it would be like for me I understand about scratches that s*** bugs the s*** out of me

It would annoy me for sure especially if it's in my primary viewing area. Maybe less so if it was on the passenger's side.

I've done repairs on windshields on the OUTSIDE (from wiper scratches) and it is a bitch to do because you have to monitor the heat with a temp. gun device while hi-speed buffing it using a special pad and compound and takes hours to complete. It is tricky as you are sanding off a layer and dont want to do it unevenly as it will look warped like a circus mirror. I think the INSIDE of glass has a protective coating on it and cannot be buffed out(??) but you could ask a windshield repair shop if they have more info. on solutions.

I have read where they make an Acrylic composite that can be used to fill cracks, but I’m not sure I’d want to do it myself for fear I’d making it worse, or not having a good understanding about the interior glass coating, as others have indicated, exists.

You can’t be the first person in the word to which this has happened, so I am hopeful that someone has a technique that could be used to at least mitigate some of the worst of its affects.

I know outside chips and cracks can sometimes be repaired, not sure about inside. In any case, you need to contact a professional. You probably don’t have the right tools and will be unlikely to do a good job the first time you’ve ever done it.
