eSIM issue update from BMW
I received email today. In part states the following :
We are happy to inform you that we now have a new software upgrade available at your preferred BMW Service Center to correct the eSim operation issues you've been experiencing. To get your vehicle updated, we kindly request that you schedule an appointment with your preferred BMW Service Center. During this visit, the preferred BMW Service Center will manually download the new software version into your vehicle. Additionally, we are pleased to share that this new software version will also be made available via Remote Software Upgrade sometime in January 2025. This means that you will have the option to receive the upgrade remotely, without the need to visit the preferred BMW Service Center, providing you with even greater convenience. |

Same here. First a message from the provider. And upon request at the dealer confirmation that an update is needed. Planned before the holidays.

Didn’t work for your guys. It didn’t for mine.
Trying to work with ATT now. When I go activate att only has my wife number as only number to sync too. They can not figure it out they did tell me about the bmw update. Informed them I had done it already. My number didn’t even show in their system for connect car |

How often do they try to fix something with software updates, which never help? Most of the time it’s hw issue… so much wasted time

The fact is that esim has not worked reliably since the Fall of 2022 when it was introduced in the G70. I am on ATT. It worked, then it didn't work. I'd come out to my car in the morning not knowing whether when it started esim would connect. Sometimes it did. Sometimes it said 3/4 steps completed and a reset of idrive would connect it. The fact that a reset could reestablish the connection says this is a software problem, and BMW has not only failed to fix it but has made it worse with software updates. I ended up canceling the service because of its unreliability and because with 2 cars with it (G70 and G60) esim could never connect to the car you wanted it in. For a company that prides itself on its engineering and now has software-dependent cars almost across the board, it is shameful and embarrassing that they can't get this fixed.

The iX forum is full of people who’ve had eSIM issues since it was first introduced. Definitely an embarrassment for BMW.

Sorry to bubble this rather annoying esim thread to the top of the soup again, but I do have a question.
I have T-mobile as my carrier and getting the esim setup was pretty easy. It seems to be functioning fine, from what I can tell. However, what I have noticed is that periodically, over the last week I keep getting text messages and emails from T-Mobile stating either "Thanks for adding 1 line(s) to your T-mobile Account" or "Great News! the SIM for your number ending in xxxx has been updated. If you didn't make a SIM or device change, please call Customer Care at 611 for help" I'm assuming this is part of the Software issue? What's annoying is that I specifically mentioned this to my CA and asked them to check if the NOV software update was performed at the VPC and to have it done prior to delivery. I checked it today. Still July. Edit and Update: I called T-Mobile, and sure enough it added another esim line to my account, which I had deleted. Last edited by ToddRGuy; 01-04-2025 at 11:51 AM.. Reason: Added Info |

I have scheduled an appointment for Monday the 13th to get the November iDrive update. Can someone provide me with a TSB, should they challenge me on this?

Honestly, unless it costs you $, I’d leave the eSIM thing alone. It seems an ungodly mess and honestly I still haven’t worked out any upside for me in trying to get it to work.

What is the eSIM for, exactly? Is it just for the wifi hotspot?

I like the concept of the BYOeSIM model but you gotta nail the execution. It doesn’t help the nearly every part of the cellular network authorization process is fraught with problems.

I wasn’t sure how widespread the issue is. I always have to remind myself that the forum isn’t a good statistical model, in many cases. This time it seems it was!
