Charging performance at Level 3 charging stations
This might be a rant, but the charging performance of my i5 eDrive 40 has been bad to say the least. I have never gotten more than 185 kWh at any station and that only holds for about 10% before it tails off to about 130. Most of the sessions have been with an initial state of about 20 - 30% SOC and they have been at 350 kW stations. But today's session was the worst. Started at 28% SOC and the max was 88 kWh. It did hold the same 88 or 87 for the duration of 18 minutes to get me to 64% SOC. I know that the station was not derating. There was an Ioniq 5 next to me that was pulling in 150 at a 70% SOC. All of the units were 350 kW units and only one other car was charging. One would think that BMW should have enough data about the battery by now to unlock better charging speeds. Will probably switch to the new Mercedes CLA when it comes out next year just in time for my least to be up!

Mercedes has terrible quality ratings by the way (check Consumer Reports - BMW #1 - MB near rock bottom). I’m assuming this was at EA, but how do you know it was the car and not the EA station? The fact that another car at the same station was getting a higher rate really means nothing as many on this forum can attest. It would be helpful to see a photo of the charging rate display from the vehicle while charging is in progress, as that tells a lot. If there are slashes on the right of the charging rate bar, it means the charger is limiting power and not the car. Also, getting a high peak rate initially that tapers off (185 down to 130) is very normal and protects the battery from the thermal stress of DCFC.

This was some of the press materials around the i5’s charging curve that came out a while back - the speed tails off quite substantially once you get above 50% SOC

Was it cold outside when you were charging? Did you pre-condition the battery before getting to the charging station? Those both may affect your charging speeds.

My experience has been similar, but charging has still been quick. I believe it is just the way the car manages it. Of course, as my first EV, I have nothing to compare with. But, my charging experience has not been bad and I’ve traveled all over New York and the Northeast with it.

You cannot compare to an Ionic with 800 volt architecture. The next generation of BMWs will get 800v. That rate seems low for an Ionic, so it was probably the station.
