Some new owner questions

Hey all,

So I am settling in with my G61 i5 40 now, had a little over a week.

I have a few questions. I think we answered one about the key fobs in another thread.

But my exterior puddle lighting just seems like a plain light. In this video it looks like it has some cross hatch type pattern to it which seems to be a new BMW design signature.

Is this just an M60 thing?

Secondly my adaptive windscreen wipers are awful. This may be one for my friends in the UK, but in the weather we've had recently my adaptive wipers NEVER go to constant they always stay on intermittent even when my screen is so bad it's dangerous. I have the sensitivity dialed all the way up. I have to intervene and clear my screen. I have had my fiancée in the front and she has been demanding I clear my screen

I know adaptive wipers are never perfect but they are worse than any other BMW I have owned.

Also what is the general consensus on regen settings - I have tried the medium mode and am currently experimenting with adaptive after initially disliking it and switching it off. But I think I am getting used to how it will be have a lot more.

Puddle lights: Some cars have the pattern you see in the video, and others have just a plain white pattern. My car, 2024 i5 eDrive40 (non-wagon), has the design in your video. However, I've seen others in this forum with just the plain white pattern. It might be random, I'm not sure how that is decided.

Wipers: I can't comment on the wipers - I'm in southern California and I think I used the wipers once so far. Sorry.

Regen: I didn't like Adaptive because it was unpredictable and made it difficult to brake smoothly and consistently. For D mode, I keep regen at Low because if I drive in D mode, I want it to feel most like an ICE car and coast easily. Usually now, I drive in B mode, which automatically has regen at the max setting. If you don't want to drive in B mode, then I suggest you set the regen to either Low, Med or High for D mode - whichever one you feel most comfortable with. You need to try each one out for a while, to see which one you like the most. If you're like some of us, I suspect you will eventually use B mode most of the time. It took me a few weeks to get there, but I do prefer B mode now most of the time. When I'm not in a B mood, I pick D with Low regen, but not often any more.

Puddle lights - I though that this pattern is "projected" if you have illuminated grill only.

Puddle lights: Mine were plain until I bought the welcome lights upgrade for $25. Now it displays the crosshatch pattern with an M in it.
Wipers: IDK. Mine work fine in auto. as I speed up they eventually go constant. Are you sure you have the selector dialed all the way on sensitive?

AHH Interesting re the puddle lights. I am also showing the welcome light animation upgrade on the store.

I don't have illuminated grill but Airedale does and still needed the upgrade so that sounds like it, might take a look.

Definitely have it all the way on sensitive. I might try and clean the sensor or something because it does work, but they don't go to all the way on even when it is clearly needed.

I have the illuminated grill but not the upgraded welcome lighting and I have the cross hatched puddle lights. Could it be because I have the M Sport Pro package?

My adaptive wipers work fine. Occasionally, I might wish for a swipe to come sooner.

I agree with SkykingUSA that Adaptive regeneration was too unpredictable. I settled on D with regen on low. B mode drives me nuts, but your mileage may vary.

Have the same with the wipers! Feel like I want to speed it up the whole time.
I don’t know if there is a fix, but def looking for one!

Regen; I use the D mostly with mild regen to slow down as a brake. B is way to rigourous for my taste.

I have the illuminated grill, but don’t know about the cross lighting. Will check this out later.

My M60 has plain puddle lights - I don’t think they are customizable via software updates (I purchased the welcome lights package and that just affects the front light patterns when you approach the vehicle).

No issues with my wipers - they go from intermittent to full to fast no problem. Maybe there’s something up with your rain sensor?

I am a B driver from almost day 1 - it just works so well on freeways, I can just lift off and get most of the braking I need as traffic slows. It’s predictable and I find it very comfortable to use.

That's nice. I haven't seen one with an M before. I wonder when they are going to start selling replacement lenses for those.

The lights move too, like making a waving effect. Before I bought the upgrade it was just a plain puddle light. So I'm not sure it's in the lenses, but the LED's themselves form the patterns The one in the picture Patch posted above show a sharper angle and no M in them like mine has.

I wonder if they upgraded the puddle light hardware from the first models off the line (mine’s 1 yr old now, I think Skyking’s similar). There are certainly other little tweaks and features that have been added since then.

Mine have the cross hatch pattern, but you can’t tell in the photo. My car is a year old and has M-Sport. I live in the Seattle area where it rains all the time, except in summer. We might have 3 days in a row with just overcast skies but never any longer than that. I keep my wipers on auto and they work really well at clearing water. They speed up, slow down according to the amount of rain.

I think you're right - probably updated hardware. I have the Welcome Light purchase as well, and it didn't change anything with my puddle lights. I even checked them on each setting of the three Welcome Light options, plus the Off setting and there is no difference to the puddle light pattern on mine. My i5 eDrive40 was born on Feb 1, 2024 and I took delivery in mid March.

So I just activated a one month free trial off the welcome lights, and as of yet I don't think it has done anything to my puddle lights but I have a long return road trip for work tomorrow and will be making a few stops so will check properly.

Just seems odd that there is no rhyme or reason to it. My car was a WK 36 build like Airedale's. I think we went down the line within a day of one another.

PvdH good to know it isn't just me with teh wipers, as I say my passenger has commented on them. I am going to try and give the sensor a good wipe and see if there is any improvement.

While the wipers *should* speed up on their own - the intermittent control setting also applies to auto-wipers and can encourage them to speed up.

It's not perfect and I find that the higher levels are too sensitive/fast all the time, but it's what I use when I find it's not quite responding how I want. It may just be that they have finally adjusted the range to be usable in the i5 (in most of my other BMWs I always left the setting to the lowest possible and occasionally turned it up 1 and never more - kinda making the whole range useless).

Another new owner question....

Happy Thanksgiving to all!!!

Had my 550e for a few days. So far, very impressed.

Been using my phone as the digital key.

Does anyone know how to turn on pathway lighting remotely?

For example, when I park on a dark street and want to light it up as I walk to the car.

Thanks!!

Thanks for posting. What I'm looking for is a way to turn on pathway lighting without the key fob - just using the iphone or watch remote control.

Not sure if you can do that - the only thing I could see in the menu was a way to set the duration of the pathway lighting but that only seems to activate when you push the full beam stalk away from you before exiting.

Of course the “halo lights” come on when you approach with the phone but I think you’re thinking of the actual headlights, correct?
