Bluetooth and Android Auto

I'm wondering if anyone has seen this issue yet. I just picked up my 540iX on Monday. I was able to connect the Bluetooth on my Samsung S20+ to the car, but when trying to connect Android Auto it says Bluetooth@ no longer compatible. So I tried using my wife's Iphone 13 Pro Max. No Apple Car play either. I tried the dealer's Android phone also. No dice. Today I tried to connect a friend's brand new Samsung S24+ and same thing happened. It connected the phone, but could not use Android Auto.

The dealer is trying to get the tech dept to look into it. When I get in the car, Android Auto tuns on on the phone, and on the IDrive screen it says ready to connect Android Auto on your Samsung S20+, but when I hit the message to connect, it again says Bluetooth@ no longer compatible. He think's it's because it's a US Specs car and my phone is European Specs. But my wife's Iphone is US. So what gives? I think it's a problem with IDrive. So I tried restarting it, but same. I can make phone calls, and play music, but not use Android Auto. I also got it with US Cartography so I don't even have the native GPS to use. I'm currently using a cellphone holder in a cup holder to navigate. But I don't think that is a permanent solution.

I did. Reboot IDrive, and my phone. Twice. Removed the phone, re added it etc. I even tried it on my wife's Iphone 13 Pro Max, and a friend's brand new Samsung S24+. Same issue.

Is it possible I need to activate the personal E-SIM in order to get it to work?

I don't think the eSim has anything to do with the Bluetooth functionality. May be a problem with the car's bluetooth?? not sure.

Weird, because my phone does connect to Bluetooth. I can make and receive calls etc... Just not with Android Auto or Apple Car Play does it say incompatible Bluetooth.

Something similar would happen, rarely, on my previous G08 iX3. Really random and when it did no amount of reboot, re-pair etc would fix it. Drove off, did whatever I was gonna do and then later or the next day it would work again. Didnt do anything about it really. But it wasnt regular so not quite the same situation.

Yeah, the issue with mine isn't that it sometimes doesn't work. It's that it has never worked since I got the car on Monday.

When you go to the Mobile Devices app in iDrive, can you select Android Auto on the screen showing your phone? There are three check boxes there: Phone, Audio and Android Auto. On my car, if I click the Audio box, Android Auto won't connect. But if I click the Android Auto box, the Audio doesn't connect. Those two seems to be mutually exclusive. I think the reason is because Android Auto handle the music playing when it's connected so you don't need the separate Audio connection.

Check that screen to make sure Android Auto is selected. You probably did that already, but just adding it here to make sure.

Here's what I got from BMW Genius line.

"Dear Customer,

Thank you for contacting BMW/MINI Assist Customer Care.

VIN: WBA63FJ04SCT62883

BMW and MINI offer a wide range of digital services like Navigation, Real-Time-Traffic-Information, Speed Limit Information, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant and many others.

As you have purchased a U.S specified vehicle, all of these services have been designed for use within the United States, Canada and some U.S Territories. If the vehicle is driven in other regions these digital services may not work properly or will not function at all.

Furthermore, if one or more digital services work properly when taking possession of the vehicle there is no guarantee that it is a stable condition, as it is possible that digital services stop working, for example due to a software update or differences in international cellular roaming availability if the vehicle is driven cross-border.

In the USA or Canada, the integrated telematics module, BMW Connected Drive, MINI Connected and the integrated features, are otherwise fully functional (but still may be subject to limitations such as related to cellular network capacity, topological and geographic conditions, or telematic equipment issues."

So I guess that means I am SOL until I get it back to the US. If it doesn't work then I will have to make a warranty claim. But I want something from BMW stating it did not work on delivery.

Interesting. That response almost sounds like you need to call BS on it, but how can you know for sure?

Since it's just the Android Auto portion that is not working (Bluetooth and Audio work fine), maybe you need to go down the support route with Google instead of BMW. Maybe Android Auto has certain geographic settings that are causing problems. I would try contacting Google for support with Android Auto.

What is the software version on your car? Carplay got reworked on the latest update and has less issues and I wonder if same is the case with Android. Very rare but have seen carplay still work and function fine but the screen refused to open. It would still show carplay maps on idrive home screen but carplay screen wouldn't open. Before last update sometimes had to fully unpair phone to get it to connect but those issues seem to be resolved.

So I got Word back from the dealer as well. They have a 530iX USPec that is a dealer Spec car. They have been trying to connect to Apple Car Play and Android Auto as well in that car and it doesn't work either. Makes me feel a little bit better that it isn't a "My Car" problem. It is a location problem. The car needs to be in the US to work properly. I wonder if there is something I can turn on or off with BimmerUtility that will make it work.

Trust me it doesn't have to be in the US for it to work. Ask me how I know, I cant even get my car to charge properly on a consistent basis, in NY.
Maybe they gave me a European spec vehicle, because nothing ever works 100% of the time.
My car is garbage.

That is what the sheet I had to sign months ago said. Specifically that Android Auto and Apple car play would not work in the EU, and what the Genius Line is also now telling me. That the car is designed for USA, Canada and Mexico, so the telematics won't allow it to work. Since it's a US Spec vehicle, Android Auto will not operate, because the vehicle knows it's not in the US. Just to make sure it wasn't My car, they took the 2024 530i Demo car they have at the dealer and tried and were not able to connect any of the Cellphones. IT works with Bluetooth, But Android Auto and Apple Car play won't work. I'm jsut wondering if there is something I can switch on or off in BimmerUtility that will allow it to work.

I see what your saying now I'm guessing this is information you didn't know before you purchased the vehicle in a US spec

I kinda did, but since I had rented bimmes here in the EU before I figured it would work regardless. I guess I can love with it for a couple of years just using my phone like I have for the last 5 1/2 years.
