Hi. Just got my new car. So so happy. So so much poorer

I have a couple of questions. Would be supergreatful to get some input.
1. Does the car have break in oil in it? The car says service oil in 30 000km first time… feels like i should do one at about 10000km or so…
2. What is the best oil to use (ignore price).
3. Is there any good manual/video on how to do this yourself (oil change) for this car (g60)?

Congratulations on your new vehicle purchase!

Typically the first service interval is 10,000 miles or 16km. I’m not certain where you’re getting the other figure from, but I’ve never seen an interval that high on a BMW.

There are many people that elect to change the oil sooner. I’ve seen people do it between 2,500 miles (4,000km) and 5,000 miles (8000km) for the first oil change.

As you did not state which model you have, it would be difficult to make an oil recommendation. Many people stick with BMW branded oil, others will have recommendations.

The BMW computer says 30 000km to oil service. Brand new. Never serviced. I live in Sweden.

I have a 540xi and I changed my oil and filter at 5k miles. Just seemed like the prudent thing to do.

Congrats! There are a few threads here with new G60 owners discussing “early” oil changes. Seems as though it’s up to you and your comfort level with the manufacturers guideline.

If you want to keep car for longer - make first change around 1000-2000km and therefore every 15.000km.
Don’t wait until 30.000km unless you want to pay for Engine repair.

I also have a 530e. Bought in July 2024.
In France the first oil change is 30,000 kms or 2 years whichever comes first. So far in 4 months I have driven 2100 kms.
However the petrol engine has powered the car for only 450kms. In 2 years I expect to cover no more than 20,000 kms (longer trips planned ) of which the petrol engine will probably only power the car for something like 5000 to 8000 kms. So not really excessive.
Could be a different situation in a 520 G60.

It's my opinion that BMW or probably any other Car manufacture does not want the vehicle to last longer than 6 years let alone probably not even 3 years. In BMW's case this aligns with warranties they give you and extending the service intervals between maintenance items. The Ultimate Care service plan frankly isn't very ultimate for the customer its more ultimate for BMW. They will say things like well the data shows this or that and that is how we came up with the internals and items to perform services on. (and will only get worst with AI figuring those things out if not already). In reality they want the consumer to think of them like Apple, to purchase a new iPhone/vehicle every couple years type industry. How do you get there? They start by using cheaper plastics, cheaper parts, just-good-enough materials, throwing the latest bells and whistle of haphazardness technologies that are never well supported or 100% functional before the next model, and make the repair and maintenance side outrageously priced to nearly force your hand to buy a new vehicle. And it works because here we all are.

Yeah, that’s what I intend to do as well. They must have different recommendations in every country, but in the U.S. all information I can find states 10k miles or 1 year, whichever comes first.

Personally, waiting longer seems like you’re asking for trouble.

I think time will tell. They have to maintain some levels of reliability for long term use, as all of these datapoints are quantified and published.

I’ve had my Audi for 6.5 years and done nothing but yearly scheduled maintenance, along with “recommended” maintenance (e.g. transmission and brake fluid flush) and one spark plug change.

I’ve not had any unscheduled maintenance or repairs, but I am a low mileage driver.

This all depends on the oil used, the oil filter, and the particulate filter int he oil pan. From what I understand the oil is thin enough (0W-10) that a special break in oil is not necessary. The warranty in the US is 3 years/36,000 mi. And the service/extended warranty packages will take it all the way to 7 years, 125,000 mi. So if they only wanted your car to last for 6 years, would they seriously have this package available. BTW I got a statement with my Military package giving me 4 years, 50,000 mi of initial warranty.

I understand the nervousness about early oil changing. But this is not the 80's when changing your oil anything over 3,000 mi was dancing with the devil. Oil, and filter technology has drastically improved with synthetics. They can maintain viscosity over a lot longer period and filters clean the oil better. I may change the oil sooner initially, but after that it will be following the computer. It has worked for all my vehicles so far. I have never blown an engine, needed major engine repairs, etc. Of course I don't "Launch" my cars either. And I respect break in periods. I do believe BMW stated the engine (B58) would not even be allowed by the computer to reach full power until after the break in was completed.

We actually get 4/50k miles here my friend. All the German brands offer that. We get 3 years worth of scheduled service, so maybe that’s why you’re thinking ’3’. I assume that applies to your car too? In the U.S. they’re running 0W/20 in the B58TU2 so I’ve read.

Yup, you're right. It's here in the EU they get 3 years, unlimited km.

I ordered 4 years of both Service and Repair packages for my 550e. Jobs and materials will become so much more expensive in the coming years, I'm seeing it as insurance.

I did purchase 2 extra years for the servicing up to 60,000 kms. €1300.
3 extra years of warranty up to 200,000 kms. €2556.

In France virtually anything you purchase is warranted for two years by law.
Which obviously is what BMW chooses to follow. It does mean that anything I purchase from say Amazon is also warranted for two years. So ups and downs !

I only got the 2 years because I will be back in the US before the car is 4 years old. And I can then purchase the US Extended warranty and service plan. I am able to get the extended warranty here, but not the service plan for a US Specs car.

Im giving my 530e the same treatment as my F31 328i, which was stated in the users manual as well - for the first 1500 km no revving past 4500 rpm, speed below 140 km/h, dynamic driving (accelerating and decelerating by letting the engine brake) and no monotonous highway driving. This lets the piston rings set real good n tight and just wears everything in nicely, thats the rheory at least. Then I had an oil change done getting rid of any metal shavings and debris from the factory that may be in there or that my mind believes is in there. It felt good, its easy to do and it only costs an oil change and I believe its better to do than not to do.

I still had that N43 engine replaced at 140'000 km ( ~ 88'000 miles) but that was due to timing chain issues (newer models has the chain improved).

So I am forcing it now, driving around like a retard in sport mode accelerating and decelerating when possible.
