Shoot me.. I was hoping they'd grab Leno for one of the spots. At least Jay knows a differential from a doorbell.
Eric Stromer? Doesn't everybody think that idiot is one of the most annoying people on TV? He sounds like a stoned Jeff Spicoli, for pete's sake. The whole idea about Top Gear isn't a car show. It's a high brow Brit version of Jackass with cars as props, in my mind. That US threesome can't even talk about cars in any distinguishable sense.... |

Exactly. People forget that the UK version was on for decades before it got good. It's very likely that the US version will never be as good, but it doesn't matter as they're not competing with each other. I'll watch both.

My helmet is open face (I'd need a new full-face) and I don't have a white nomex driver's suit, but yeah, pretty much like that.

I predict an epic fail. The attraction of Clarkson et al is their bumbling, self deprecating approach, which actually masks an indepth knowledge of all things motoring (Clarkson and May were long-time automotive print journalists long before Top Gear stardom). Let’s see: Carolla—the guy has always struck me as unfunny and arrogant, so what qualifies him to host the show—oh yeah, he owns a couple of fancy cars. Foust—isn’t he the guy who hosts one of these inane adolescent level “fast car” shows that is shown on perpetual reruns on speedtv (to its shame)? Eric Stromer WTF is he?
Ranting aside, the real reason it will fail is because the BBC is not commercially sponsored (no commercials). And NBC?—well, can you imagine Carolla and company being allowed to level the type of humiliating criticism at the ford/chevy/chrysler/mercedes/toyota/ honda/bmw etc product that, moments before, was being pushed in a commercial--the type of scathing criticism that the original TG is famous for? Never happen. I predict Motorweek levels of (non) criticality, mixed with some Manshow humor, and a richly deserved cancellation after the first season. |

Haha the fat stig is still cool! As for the cast lineup, yes I do not approve. I'd prefer people who can respect cars and know somewhat a lot about them, not just say whats on brief stats sheet. I have more things against it, but this is just brief, and I'll still watch just to see how it turns out. But yeah who is the Eric Stromer and how does he have relation to cars??

I can see it now.....
Inspired by their irreverent, trash-talking predecessors in the UK, America's "Top Gear" team will decide to do some wacky "Top Gear"-style stunts. The first time they whip-steer a Ford Explorer -- "just to see how many times we can get it to roll over" -- NBC will yank the program faster than you can say "technical difficulties." It will be movie-of-the-week immediately and forever. We're VERY sorry, Mr. Ford. In other words, don't fret that the American version will have no stars. Worry that it'll have no balls.

Stromer is a construction type guy, maybe hes there for all the crazy challanges? From all the American type car shows, I notice a lot of them are the construction/restoration/monster truck type of shows where they work on project cars...maybe they are leaning more toward that direction, where as the BBC Top Gear challanges are more slap stick? I think Leno's comment on the American Top Gear pretty much showed that he didn't want to touch it with a 10' pole.
Oh, BTW, I was just thinking the other day that Leno would be a great guest on the BBC Top Gear...maybe Seinfeld too. |

An American Top Gear was a bad idea to begin with. The cast is the shitty icing on a shit cake.
