My BMW app not updating

Woke up this morning to the app not updating. Closed and reopened. Turned off phone. Logged out of the app and back in. Still nothing. Shows car but no info - no range, location, etc.

I know at times BMW has had issues but just curious if anyone else is seeing the same today.

It’s a data center issue caused by Hurricane Helene - there’s another thread about this, along with the MyGarage site.

I hope BMW NA and Group are learning some lessons here on DR and BCP planning.... When you have a highly connected product that relies on back-end infrastructure you better think five 9's, RTO's, and have business continuity plans to react and recovery from disasters. IMO this is kind of ridiculous on a multi-billion dollar company. Just saying it should be embarrassing to them.

I’m sure there are tens of thousands more who have no idea what’s going on with their app right now. BMW isn’t the best at finding ways to push messages out (maybe they could enlist their prolific email marketing team….?)

I think the problem with BMW (and all German car brands) is they do not take it as an embarrassment and sadly just kind of chalk it up to "oh well". If they really cared, they would have switched servers from So. Carolina to Munich, ONE week ago when all Int'l weather agencies said how severe Helene was going to be.

Also, if BMW really wanted to make their connected services top notch, they would have poached Tesla engineers a long time ago!

It's bad enough not being able to check range, battery %, send a lock or unlock command, no climate commands...but for many of us, this server outage has killed our Highway Assist Plus, traffic info, etc...

Yeah I get that ol' German mentality. however they should use some of that ol' engineering swagger to go the whole way, down to the IT side of it. I think Germans don't like being laughed at and there are a lot of folks chuckling and pointing to them right now...

The real eye opener for me is the connected services that change that actual driving functionality of the car in this situation. Some of the other functions (preconditioning for instance) can still be used with the remote key on my phone if I’m close enough inside my house, but that doesn’t help when I’m at the office.

I’m glad to have found this thread.

Yesterday on my drive to work the car downloaded the 07/24 update. During the day I noticed the app saying I could have the car install remotely, so I tried, but it told me my internet connection was too weak.

I got home, did the update, and wondered why it seemed like the app couldn’t tell what was happening with the car, and said the last information was from 0655 yesterday morning. The electronic key worked fine. I rebooted the car because computers, but it still didn’t connect. I figured I’d call a Genius today if it still seemed wonky but have also noticed people saying that calling support gives some canned message about it not being available.

I agree with the assessment of the German mentality vis-à-vis this kind of thing happening, but I also agree that maybe a teensy bit of redundancy for the US would be… deutlich umsichtig, or clearly prudent.

I actually imagine it’s North America. I haven’t paid attention if some respondents have been in Canada.

So confirmation it’s North America.

Would it kill them just to do some kind of quick blurb on their website saying “Hey it’s down no ETA on when it’ll be back up.” I guess the answer is yes?

YES! So shocked my Highway Assist Plus says no longer active, license expired. Traffic info, stop sign, stop light info gone, and much more!

Also, how in the he** did we get OTA yesterday, with all the servers down? And now the bug with the 7 Series where the climate sync would not stay, is part of this new update....and it is affecting lots of iX and some 5 Series. How would BMW let a 7 Series only bug, get added to an update for iX, 5 Series, X5, X6 and X7??

...and let's hope those of us who have lost Highway Assist Plus, traffic info, sign recognition, etc...that it can come back via another OTA or the servers coming back! An acquaintance in Maryland, his BMW dealer told him yesterday that the affected cars who lost highway assistance....ALL the tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands of cars will need a service appt. WTF?!

Quite frankly, if that ends up being true, that would be unreal. I would think that once the servers are restored that the car would simply link and verify/validate the license for the various features. I wouldn't put a lot of stock in what dealers say right now. They're clearly getting a significant amount of misinformation as well.

Things seem to be at least partially back up. The app shows a current update from the car. I couldn’t get the cameras to respond but I see charging history and current status of everything else.

So… hooray?

With HQ in NJ, at the very least, they should be redundant in multiple areas, if not only to load balance. Not to mention that for such a large company to not geo-locate with cloud services is kind of shocking, actually. Even if they were dedicated to on-prem, they could easily buy data center space at strategic locations around the US and Canada.

App updated with time, date, range, battery %, location....but remote commands still fail Turning on the A/C via the app is probably my #1 reason for having an EV. Sure hope BMW gets this working.
