i5 stops charging when locked

Newbie to EV but long time BMW fan !
Just picked up a '24 i5 M60 couple of weeks ago.
This week I start to notice the car stops charging itself at around 50 - 52% and if I unlock the car, it'll start charging again. If I then lock the car again as I'm in a public place, it'll stop charging again
Car is set to accept 90% max charge. Max AC charging current is set at 48A.
This is a ChargePoint station at my work.
Does anyone experience the same situation ? Is there additional iDrive setting I need to tinker with to allow continuous charging (to 90%) ?
Thanks.

Definitely should not behave this way. What software version are you on? Have you tried rebooting idrive (sometimes cures these odd behaviors).

Good question. Will need to find out ver. of sw.
The car was completely reset (not just rebooting iDrive) last Saturday at the dealer to resolve the issue of 'No mobile data reception at current location'.

Make sure if you signed up for the chargeforward program you unenroll. It had issues, but not sure they would be related to what you are seeing.

I was told by my SA that BMW will not force software update, even if asked by customer b/c of this reason. He flat out told me, b/c I requested the latest software to be installed when I had i5M60 in for repair. The reg manager from BMW replied to their req with a resounding DO NOT update as new software can stop vehicle charging while at home. I thought is was total BS but who knows.

I have a charge point level 2 at home. My car updates to latest software automatically. I have had no issues at all charging at home or on the road. The issue with the work site charge point level 2 is probably a setting in the charger itself. Have you tried different level 2 chargers?

Have you received an OTA update? What version are you on? There were posts on various forums that the 03/2024 update that some received from dealers was causing issues with L2 charging and the OTA was therefore put on hold.

Just now checked for updates and returned that I have the latest version.
Glad I didn't get the 3/2024 yet if it is a problem.

Sorry, been out for a few days with the car sitting in the garage (unlocked!) on a 1kW slooooow charge for almost 48 hours ...... (It's now at 80% finally)
Just purchased a BMW Wallbox(9.6kW at 40A) and having buyer's remorse already. (ChargePoint HomeFlex - 12kW max at 48A)
Software version is 11/2023.47 also.
On OTA update, it looks like it won't let me do it in the garage. Will try that later this week. BTW, will I know which version sw I'll be downloading and will I have the option to decline it if it's this 03/2024 one ?

Hi SkykingUSA,
Thanks for the note. I don't think I signed up for ChargeForward.

Thank you for the suggestion. Will try that when all else fails.
Just to be sure, iDrive reboot is to hold down the volume thumbwheel until the screen goes blank then release ?

Chris’s Bimmers on YouTube (I believe he’s a dealership genius) says to hold it for 30 seconds.

Thanks. I recall now reading somewhere about holding the thumbwheel down for 30 seconds.

Actually, for a full reboot, I thought you had to hold it down for 70 seconds. If I quickly find the video link, I'll come back and add it to this post.

Yep, here is the video:

A reboot needs 70 seconds - he says that at around the 3:48 point in the video.

Mine has never just come back on. I turn it off and hold it for maybe a minute. Then I press it again. Genius line helped me with that because I was following the video that said it would automatically reboot.

I think BMW just released 3/2024.57 update and quite a few folks on the Forum have successfully installed it.
Will try to do this update and see if the issue has gone away.

Happy to report that after switching to a different CP station at work, I was able to charge the car to full(80%) while locked !
This was also before the 3/2024.57 update !

I’m using a hard-wired BMW wallbox at home and it’s been just fine! Does what it says on the tin.

Sorry to hijack this...but my new, current Generation BMW wall box home charger is so weird. I plug it in, nothing. Unplug and plug right back in....charging begins.

All internal switches are on and in the correct place too. My Charge Point home charger and a "cheapie" we got on Amazon....car starts charging right away, the first time.

BMW Wallbox (mine) takes two attempts to activate charging But, then it is perfect.

Did the upgrade to 03/2024.57, No issues at all charging at home or at a high speed charger. It would appear the update has been corrected. I also noticed that my assisted highway driving does a better job staying center lane now even at 69 MPH on the curvy Southern State Parkway on Long Island. Another notice was my expected range seems to have increased but that might just be me slowing down as I get older

Make sure your car is set to start charging immediately. It is under the charging settings in the idrive
