Hmmmm, I get the argument, but at the same time I really love the practicality of our X5 50e -- most of the time, 44 miles of EV range gets the job done, and on road trips it is great to not have to think about charging.
That said, both of my BMW PHEV's have had stretches of 6+ weeks in the repair shop in my first year of ownership due to failures in the hybrid system - the complexity of these systems is just crazy. I was pretty set on waiting for the 550e, but the thought of having to deal with another fragile BMW PHEV drive train was hard to take. Now that I am easing into BEV ownership, the anti-PHEV arguments make more sense to me. I think a lot of that has to do with how little I have missed the ICE -- it actually got to the point that it would annoy me when it kicked on in my 530e - which was often in recent years when the battery degraded to 8 miles of EV range |

When I was considering what my next car was going to be, I came up with the same reasons in the article for avoiding a PHEV and went BEV. But YMMV.

PHEV's seem like they would be a servicing nightmare if owned after the factory warranty expires. These cars (the entire G60 lineup) are already incredibly complex. Adding yet another layer of complexity just strikes me as courting disaster.

I rejected a PHEV for many of the same reasons. I feel like you're carrying around a second powertrain and energy source in all cases just to deal with covering a bigger % of your use cases when in reality for most people one or the other is actually better.

I was thinking G30 PHEV at first, but ultimately came to the same conclusions in that article and went full EV. 95% of my driving is home to work commute. Most “long” trips are still well within range. No need to carry all the load of gas powertrain for the few trips beyond that…and I’m done with oil pan gasket and oil filter housing leaks.

I agree with the article’s points. One of my previous cars was a Prius Prime. It was lovely when in EV mode, but once the gas engine kicked in it was unpleasant. Groaning, whining, and straining.

having 2 systems sounds great. one fails, you still have another.
but in reality, you get one 2-in-1 system. one fails, the smart car shut down itself. and the battery in hybrid is always so small. doesn't feel like a plus. i'd rather to own two cars: one pure BEV and one pure ICE. Nissan e-kicks is a better hybrid concept imo. btw, is there any PHEV could recharge its battery to 80~100% SOC by the engine? that i can enjoy the full capacity without really plug in? |

I disagree with the article. We own 2 PHEV - X5 45e and 530e. I am waiting to order a 550e.
They are perfect for running around town in electric yet have traditional highway range. Coastal NC and SC, as well as mountains of NW NC, have little in the way of rapid chargers, so full electric becomes problematic. They are complex vehicles. I have no problem with full BEV once the charging infrastructure improves to the point where I don't have re-arrange my travels to find a charger. |

have an i4 and a 550e, used to have i4 and ix3
charging in ireland is mixed at best 550e great for longer trips and acts as a full ev for the commute phev shouldn't still be essential by now but in reality they are |

I think if I ever had to travel long distances without reliable chargers, I would just have an ICE car for those trips. I have also rented cars for long trips in the past, to keep the wear and tear down on my existing car.
