Sky Lounge vs Moonroof Decision
For those of you who've decided to choose either the Premium package or the Executive package, what's your opinion of the standard moonroof or the sky lounge roof, now that you've taken delivery of your vehicle? Do you have any regrets one way or the other?
For those with the Sky Lounge roof, who've had experiences with traditional moonroofs, do you like it more? Less? Why? I've seen one person post a picture from the backseat of a 5'er with the Sky Lounge option, but that's about all I've been able to find. If someone could share some photos, much appreciated. TYIA |

Ugh the Attachment manager just drives me crazy. I’ll try uploading again later. You also get so many more options with the Executive Package. |

I like the sky lounge roof - it’s nice to get some natural light in. I came from a 3 series wagon with the really large moonroof. I like that I won’t be worried about leaks in the way that I used to do (mine never did) but it feels a bit more solid to me. Not a big “yes” or “no” thing however, more of a “nice to have”

I think it's cheap as f*ck that the sky lounge in this car doesn't have the LED lights like the sky lounges in every other BMW model....

I live in Arizona at mile high elevation and didn’t want to bake in the summer so I went standard (yes, I know about the shade). I do like to open the roof. Unfortunately, this one only opens about halfway.

I went with the standard one too. I also didn't want to bake in the hot California sun and I wasn't too fond of having the whole roof of my car made from glass. Do I regret it? No, but it would be nice to have more light. Below are some pictures. The shade opens and the sunroof opens as well.
I usually drive around with the shade opened and rarely open the glass (although I have not had the car in summer yet so I may open it temporarily to let the initial heat out in the summer). I hope these photos help. There are pictures at its tilted setting, its half-way setting, and its fully open setting.

I came from a panoramic roof in my previous EV. The thing I can say is they are gorgeous…for the back passengers. I rarely got to enjoy it while driving. I did love the view when stopped among skyscrapers or in a nice forested area. Also nice to catch a glimpse while raining. That being said, I rarely noticed it. I would have been fine to have one again, I went with the premium package to save some money but I am happy with the sunroof. Cracking or opening the sunroof is much more directly pleasing for me as the driver.
You really can’t go wrong either direction. |

I just wish the sky lounge had some sort of opening. This is first car without a opening sunroof, but with shade opened it’s nice.

I think it depends on where you live. In Seattle, it is usually overcast and/or raining. It’s very gloomy and the sky lounge roof was a must for me. I had moon roofs in my last 2 vehicles and never opened them. When I lived in Florida, I needed to be able to tilt open the moon roof when parked to let out the horrible heat build up. We usually get one week of hot weather (upper 80’s to 90).
I didn’t go full executive because I have zero use for window shades and the crystal knobs just didn’t appeal to me. My experience is that I love the amount of light in the car. I have never closed the sun shade. Maybe for that one week in the summer when it gets in the 80’s. |

I very rarely opened my sunroof on my other car so I just went with the big one. I do wish it had some LED design like the 7 though.

I miss moonroof a LOT!
I used to drive with moonroof open year round, despite living in Seattle area. And I completely agree with mjr24's statement. Last edited by elbmw; 04-03-2024 at 03:35 PM.. |

I went with a regular sunroof (not panoramic). In my book sunroof needs to open.
However, I was VERY underwhelmed when I saw how tiny this sunroof is as compared to G30. I am also not a fan of that flimsy shade, albeit 7 series uses the same thing. Bottom line, standard sunroof, like many things in this car, feels like cost cutting. |

Not sure about the panoramic glass on the i5 but on the IX it is said to cost $18,000 to replace the electrochromic panoramic roof. Probably not that much on the i5 but I would gladly trade the pano for something far cheaper, easier, and faster to replace if it’s broken. Just a thought to factor….

Thank you all for your comments and special thanks to Scrapula and SkykingUSA for taking the time to provide photos, very much appreciated.
It's an interesting decision choice. I share the sentiment of many of you, that it's disappointing that the sky lounge roof doesn't have ambient LED lighting similar to the SUVs and 7 series, especially at this price point. I have a couple of months to ponder before the 2025 order book becomes available, it would seem. |

I don’t see the smaller opening moonroof in the European configurator for a 550e. Can’t we get one in Europe? I can only choose the larger non opening panoramic.
I have always had an opening pano and liked it. My current car has a non opening really large pano roof but t.b.h. Is is more for the rear passengers than the driver and I miss the breath of fresh aer on country roads in the spring. |
