Tire & Wheel Protection package

Hi I am about to buy i5 M60 and I looking to purchase the Tire and Wheel package. The dealer I am buying the car from has it priced high about $3500 for 5 years.

I am looking to see if anyone got a better deal and if I can buy from a different dealer?

Thanks in advance.

During the last 5 to 10 years, how many times have the tires or wheels on your other cars been damaged? How munch out-of-pocket money did you spend?

That will give a good indication on whether or not $3500 for 5 years is cost effective. For most people, the answer is probably no. (or looking at it another way, the $3500 becomes pure profit for BMW) YMMV, of course.

(in my case, the last 3 times that I had tire or wheel damage beyond repair were 1992, 2011 and 2023. That's 3 times for for 10 or 11 cars during those years. Total spent was somewhere between $300 to $900 each time, so about $2000. Of course, that's mostly due to the relatively good roads around me, as well as luck.(knock on wood)

Thanks

Yes, make a lot of sense. I was considering the package as I heard the 21 inch wheels get damaged easily from potholes due to the weight of the car.

There's a reason why millions of dollars are spent pushing products like this. The profit margins are enormous and while you can always find anecdotal stories of people who have made out well with these products, the odds are wildly against you. Buyers will always be far better served by passing on these policies and self insuring. If the "peace of mind" variable is your paramount concern, then go for it. If trying to get the most bang for the buck is your priority, I'd definitely pass on all these policies.

I have 19s so most likely won’t bend a rim. I have gone through a few tires. I usually buy used ones online with high tread depth like at least 8 and works out fine. My pirelli p7 runflat are like $350 new but used with good tread depth is like $130 and they are good.

I think this is ultimately about how confident or not you are that you could absorb the financial ding if you think you might damage a rim. I do agree that this dealer always wins on these things. If you’re at the edge of what is financially comfortable to be financing the car, it might make sense to do this if self-insuring or paying out of pocket is just going to be too big a stretch.

I have no idea how much BMW will charge for replacement wheels - would it shock me if the wheels are strangely more expensive to replace in a way that makes taking this option look more attractive? Not really.

I phoned my insurance agent and they said wheel damage was covered with my policy. I would check with insurance before buying any wheel package.

I have the anecdotal story on my 2020 Ram 1500. I bought the extended warranty for it. The Ram 5th generation forum gives info on a Ram dealer who tremendously discounts the warranties they sell. All Ram factory BTW.
I bought the tire package for $260 for 6 years. Ran something over got 2 flats drove it a while since I was close to home. That killed the sidewalls and they had to be replaced. Each tire last year was $500 plus tax and $50 per mount and balance. So in that case I won.
However would be great to know if a dealer like this exists for cheaper. You know as well as I do NYC streets are really bad ask Trevor about the Belt PKWY. And EV 's are so dam heavy it doesn't take much to get a sidewall bubble.

Also it didn't hurt that the Tire guy took care of the other 2 under "warranty" about a month later.

Find me a tire package for $260 and I'll snap it up.

you know those cartoon characters that take on different personalities when behind the wheel of the car? that's me... I'm a very polite and courteous driver 99.99% of the time. As soon I exit the tunnel and enter NYC, I become a rude/crazy/tough driver(but still safe, of course).

I literally told my son that this morning. If you can drive in Brooklyn you can drive anywhere in the world. Also told him to get off his phone and watch what's going on. His friend who is a year older and got a new Honda as a Christmas gift had an accident over the weekend. Not bad, but his inexperience caused it. Terrible for the kid but I used it as learning experience for him.

When I was 18, my grandmother flew to Florida to look for a home. I stayed at her home in Los Angeles and she gave me her Pontiac Catalina to use. Not sure which engine but it was quick. I drove all over with LA traffic on the freeways and had a great summer. I could drive anywhere after that.

Since we're on the topic of Manhattan...

Unless wheels and tires thingy reimburses drivers for the upcoming congestion pricing extortion plot, it's a hard pass for me.

car manufacturers are no match for governments when it comes to robbing money from people.
