Cracked Windshield
Got a crack in the windshield from a rock back on the 9th. Glass company came out and said they would recommend replacing it because it’s in my direct line of sight.
Was notified today it will take atleast 2 months to get a new OEM windshield… |

You've probably done this, but make sure the glass company knows whether you have a HUD or not. Probably a different windshield for a HUD.

2 months is too long... but somewhat understandable because the car is new.
a couple of years ago, during the height of the pandemic, my best friend's niece had to wait almost 7 months for a windshield and driver-side glass on her Audi TT. It was not drivable for those 7 months because the windshield and driver-side glass were smashed by hail. Audi was helpful(or not helpful), but if they didn't have the parts, they didn't have the parts. |

Better wait for an OEM.
Do you have a chance to ask another dealer in your area about the part? |

I was just looking at my insurance claims history the other day. Since 1998, I've only had one claim, which was a cracked windshield in 1998. The insurance company sent me to an independent auto glass shop in MoCo. They replaced it with a non-OEM windshield(which actually had a rain sensor bracket attached to it). That turned into a fiasco. The Mercedes rain sensor refused to work. They sent me to the MB dealer to have the rain sensor replaced.(still paid by the insurance company) At the time, the rain sensor was not in stock in the US. MBUSA actually had one FedEx overnighted from MB Germany directly to my MB dealer in the DMV(Arl. Co) Unfortunately, that still did not work. Finally, they had the Mercedes dealer order the Mercedes OEM windshield(manufactured by Pilkington) After it arrived a week later, I watched as they ripped out the 1-week-old non-OEM windshield. The Mercedes OEM windshield worked perfectly with the rain sensor(the old one), obviously. |

I was informed the wind screen for the 2024 5 series is around $1200 with the HUD and Camera.

The glass costs around €500 for us. Everything else up to €1500 is small parts and wages.
I have to pay €150 myself when the insurance gets involved. |

That’s about the same price as for my 2022 X5, which had its windshield replaced in the fall. In fact, every car I’ve owned for the last 10 years has gone through at least one windshield. As they say, they don’t make them like they used to.
And as others have said, absolutely insist on OEM glass. The HUD will not image properly on anything else, no matter what they tell you—and it could cause driver assistance issues, too. New insurance company the last go around with the X5 and it took some fighting to get them to agree on the OEM. My dealer was very helpful with that. Finally, the wait sucks but is not surprising. When my 2021 M550 took a rock within the first few months of ownership, it took a couple months to get the windshield from Germany as apparently there was some minor change with the LCI model. I literally drive around with anxiety that something is about to hit and break my windshield because, again, it has happened on every car I’ve owned for a good decade now. And, no, I’m not tailgating or driving country roads. Last one, I was stopped at a stop sign not moving and a rock flew and hit the windshield! |

My dealer informed me at the time of buying that the cost of replace the windshield is not the major portion of the cost but the reconfiguration of the auto drive system is. BMW has all the cameras/sensors behind the windshield so whenever you replace the glass, make sure the sensors are configured.

RJH - Sounds like something that would happen only to me! Hang in there. They sure don’t make windshields like they used to.

Bumping the topic.
It happened having 3400km. First I saw this chip from stone and after a while it evolved into a cracked windshield. I went to dealership they had already a few replacements in new G60's. I am really surprised that this car has so fragile windshield. On my previous G30 I was driving with little chip till I got 100.000km (then car was sold) and nothing cracked. It seems like quality problem to me. I will do it from my insurance company because it is too expensive to take the costs. |

I got a big rock on mine. Took a chip out but not cracked yet. I did purchase windshield protection when I bought the car because there is a lot of construction. They have built 15,000 homes within 5 miles of my home in the last 6 years. Then they put in sewers, utilities and repave roads. There are always rock trucks. I’m not sure whether to schedule to get it filled or use the BMW warranty or just wait until it cracks. It will just get hit again.

My insurance company will fill it for free so they don't have to pay for a windshield replacement. But they'll also replace the whole windshield for free as well. I had both of these things done on my previous 328i and it was seamless. Thanks Amica.
