Can the car store music to an onboard SSD or hard drive?

So that one needn't leave the usb stick in one of the usb-c slots by the cup holders?

The attached screenshot from the owners manual seems to indicate that this is possible.

Can anyone comment on this?

based on what I've read, it is possible.... however, I don't think it's that bad having a flash drive in the USB-C port all the time.

I literally just ordered a Samsung 256gb USB-C drive 3 minutes ago. It will replace a 128gb Sandisk flash drive that I had been using in my 2023 X1 for the last several months. I use it for music files in *.alc(Apple Lossless Code) format, all were converted from my CD collection. It's much easier to manage the music files with a removable drive.

You do have to leave the USB drive connected. The transfer they’re talking about is the metadata for the files stored on the drive. It makes navigating the music on the drive a lot faster.

Like the previous poster, get a small fast USB C drive and leave it in one of the cupholder ports. You’ll never see it.

Both my F10’s have hard drives somewhere, but I never use them. I have a compact SSD plugged into a socket in the center armrest (USB-A of course), and use the “external device” and pick my drive, instead of “music collection” (the built-in drive). I think these are actually spinning drives in these older cars, so presumably they now just some solid state storage within the head unit now.

On my cars, importing music into the car’s “music collection” storage actually recoded them to conserve space, which isn’t what I wanted, and there was no way to control that, so I went straight to SSD. I would think that wouldn’t be necessary today, so I’m curious what it does now.
