Adaptive Brake Regen display in instrument cluster
I've got my brake regeneration set to Adaptive, which is displayed in the instrument cluster. But sometimes I notice that it says "Charging" instead. What does this mean?

Not sure. When I have the adaptive virtual car display set on the second screen the words “My BMW” switch to “Charging Battery” when it’s harvesting regen. The instrument cluster shows the power bar go negative, but I’ve not seen “Charging” in the instrument cluster. I assume it means the same thing?

I probably chose a different instrument cluster display. If I have my live vehicle up on the infotainment screen, it shows that it is charging during regen with little motion lines underneath the vehicle image. In sport mode, live vehicle gives you extra gauges instead. What mode are you driving in? Efficient mode has a different display.

I’m in Personal Mode. In the instrument cluster, at the bottom of the power gauge is the word “Adaptive” at an angle, which mysteriously sometimes changes to “Charging”. According to the manual, this area should show “Adaptive”, >, >>, or >>>. Hope that’s a clearer description.

I ran an errand and drove in “D” with adaptive setting. I saw the “adaptive” at an angle, and then in the other display I saw either “efficient coasting” or “charging battery” but it didn’t change the word “adaptive” on the power meter. When in B mode, I see the different chevrons but not in D/Adaptive.
Does it seem plausible that you’ve ended up with a setting that tells you when you’re harvesting regen vs coasting? |

Confirmed it. When cruise control is on and going downhill, the regen charges the battery to maintain the speed setting. The vehicle view on the infotainment screen says “charging” and the power gauge in the instrument cluster changes from “adaptive” to “charging”. There’s no mention of this behavior in the manual.

Correct, the display changes from “Adaptive” to “Charge” when switching on assisted driving.
I imagine the background is that in assisted driving mode the speed is controlled by the assistance system and no longer through the adaptive breaking mode. I think it’s pretty impressive that the engineers thought of this little detail. I am really impressed with the assisted driving systems on the i5, and I had a Model S with Autopilot for 8 years. |

I drive my 2024 i5 M60 in Comfort mode all the time, and I don't recall ever seeing the word Adaptive or Charging on the dashboard screen. Do I need to go to a certain screen choice to see this?

This only shows if you use D mode with adaptive regen - I drive in B mode and see a charging message in the virtual car display on the second screen, but the OP worked out what was what back on post #8 above (they were using D/adaptive regen and in cruise control mode)
