Quick poll - How long did your car wait in port before getting on a ship?

The genius line is literally absurd, saying it can be anywhere from two weeks to six months.
Six months? [in my best Brooklyn accent] You gotta be kidding me....
Based on what others have said here I believe a more realistic estimate would be anywhere from a week to three weeks. Why is BMW instructing these "genius'" to give such obviously inflated and absurd answers to their customers?
Please share your shipping timelines.

Thanks

About two weeks for me. It is absurd how little the Genius line seems to know. I'm sure somewhere, someone in BMW logistics knows exactly what ship your vehicle is planned for as soon as it gets to the port. But, there is just not transparency of that level of detail to the customer I guess.

Mine was in port for 14 days. There were 2 ships that left for my destination and I was on the 3rd one. There are cars from other manufacturers on those ships, so BMW won’t know how many slots are taken up by other manufacturers. It’s helpful to look at ships and chart their destinations. One of the ships I missed picked up at a VW and Mercedes port first.

Once the car is shipped to the port of departure it is no longer handled by BMW. All the shipping logistics and scheduling is done by the shipping company your car is assigned to.

So at least they know which shipping company will be handling the transport, but they can't tell you that through the Genius line until after it's already loaded and set sail. Clearly someone knows ahead of time, but that information just isn't accessible to the customer.

The shipping company used is also assigned by the port logistics company. So BMW has very little clue as to what boat you are on until you are on a boat unfortunately. I forget the name of the company at Bimmer haven port but like I said they make all arraignments after the car is at the port. BMW takes over again when the car hits the usa.

Right now, my car is in "Assembly in Progress" status and I'm more worried about the transit time to the west coast USA than anything else right now. I saw this video and am hoping that potential Panama Canal issues don't affect my shipping time too negatively.

Every time I get off the phone with the genius line I feel like I would have gotten more reliable information if I had called California Psychics.

The issue is with the cars going south to north. This is stuff from China to the east coast US. They are supposed to switch to the Suez Canal. They limit the cars going through, but north to south (Atlantic to Pacific) is not a big issue because the vehicle RoRo ships have reservations for specific dates. Normal container ships may have to sit for a week without a reservation.

I appreciate the hope that you pass on.

My car has been dispatched from the factory today so hopefully it will be on a ship soon!

My car got out of the port relative quickly- about 7 days. The big problem was it arrived at Port Hueneme on January 5th, and as of today (Feb 2) I STILL don't have the car. A lot of it had to do with the Stop Sale due to the recall. Worse yet, I had to return my '21 540i yesterday, so I am "carless." My wife ('22 X3) is not amused, and is subjecting me to some well-deserved "I told you so's"

Well, well, well, it's actually on a ship ("Morning Pilot") heading for NJ with an anticipated arrival there of 2-15-24! It actually left Bremerhaven yesterday but the MyGarage website didn't indicate it was in transit until today. So it only sat in port for 9 days before getting on a ship! Not bad. Not bad at all. Assuming all goes well (fingers crossed) I should have the car by the end of the month.

What's the best website for tracking a ship's journey?

So much for the genius line's estimates.

Congrats. There are many tracking sites, but most charge a fee once you are out of land range. There is a free one that limits you to 20 queries. As long as you only check twice daily, that one should work for you. I can’t remember the name, but I’m sure it’s posted in the forum somewhere.

I feel your pain! I sold my vehicle privately in late December and my wife and I have been a one car family since then (still waiting for my car to arrive). I can't say how many times I planned to go out while she was out to save time on things, and then remembering that I can't go out without my vehicle! She's not happy that I sold so quickly, but we learn to live with it.

Same here - my car build date was 11/19 and it made to a ship by 11/24. It arrived at Port Hueneme on 1/5 and was stuck ( due to stop sales) for 3 weeks! The car is finally in transit to the dealer as of 1/31 and expected to arrive at the dealer tomorrow!

I used marine traffic. They actually have several packages that offer satellite tracking, and each allows a seven day fee trial. With those I was able to track it all the way to Baltimore with unlimited updates.
