Smile We are all tight asses :)

Because apparently - the only people that will buy a 135i are douchebags that can't afford an M3

Thoughts? What are YOU coming from?

yawn, new 135i has more torque than the new M3. And no offense to the new M3, but, I know of a lot of other cars I would be considering at twice the price of the 135i.

i can afford an new m3 but no interest. i have driven one too. It did not grab me as much as the 1 series did.

I have had two e46 m3 but when i bought my 130i next to my m3 the m3 was sitting more in the garage and i was driving my ass off with the 130i and lsd. So much more fun. I could sell my m3 so i did. Now i have a 130i 3 doors with lsd and 135i with lsd. Very very lovely drivers cars. Don t miss the m3 for one second.

Now you have the 135i with lots more power and still the smaller and more agile car than the big e92 m3. M has lost the plot they only build fast luxery cars. That s not my thing. It already went wrong at the e46 m3. To big to be agile.

OK - I'm going to leave it open - as long as it's taken in fun, which I believe was Kris' intention - once it gets serious or ugly - SLICEO McGIRKO - it'll hit the bit bucket. . .

Ok, I'll bite for the sake of discussion... if they were the same price, I would by a new M3. Let the verbal lashings commence.

For a daily driver that I'm going to put 20K+ per year on, I can't justify the M3. I struggle with the 135 at $37K, but I can convince myself that is OK.

I could go for the M3 as my track car, but from what I've seen, the brakes are woefully inadequate, and it is way too heavy.

I can't afford an M3 and even if I could there is no way the price is justifiable in my mind. The new M3 looks like a technological marvel with all of its suspension gadgets. Although I could be wrong and it could all be hype. In any case the 1 series seems like a bargain and for a few bucks much more power can be had.

Poster in response to cayman vs. 135i special:

"never liked the poor mans 335"

and followed by

"let me add, from the headlilghts, looks like somebody stuck a dick in the cars ass giving it that 'surprised' look"

HAHAHAHA the more they hate on it the more I like it. I never seen a car make people so defensive about theirs.

Hang on there Sixbanger, it's just getting interesting. ; -)

I for one don't want an M3 (and given my advanced age and income I probably could afford one w/o having to empty the register drawers of every 7-11 in the bi-state area). I want the fat torque curve of the N54. There's some awesome tech in the M3 but if I'm spending that kinda money I'll take the Cayman S and it's supple driving dynamics.

Edit--This is will be my fourth bimmer, most recently a 2004 330ci

I dont like the way ///M is going with all their gadgetry and whatnot, they should keep the luxury/performance to BMW and make M the low volume selling, strict performance specialty car, exactly what the tii is...not too dificult, not too pricey. haha

Thoughts? What are YOU coming from?

I could afford a lightly equiped M3, but I see no reason to buy it.

If I wanted to spend that much money, I'd buy a C6 vette, and some sort of used $15k DD. The Vette blows nearly anything sub 100k out of the water when it comes to a dailey driveable performance car. It makes the M3 look like a fat, slow, poseur of a performance car, not to mention unreliable and un economical. The AWD car would cover winter use.

Or, if I could afford a loaded up M3 (70k), I'd buy a GTR, because the M3 frankly seems patently inferior to it in every regard. Worlds slower, worlds less useable, no more pratical.

I'm buying the 135i because:
-It's cheap
-It should offer the most enjoyable driving experience of any RWD coupe less expensive than an M3 or Corvette
-It's incredibly tuneable (who doesn't like tinkering)
-Quite frankly, it's better suited for occasional track use, with lighter weight, and better brakes. Different tires, and perhaps minor suspension mods are all that are needed for a real great DE car.
-I don't see the M3 as competitive, when you compare price. I see no reason to spend $30k more for a car that isn't $30k better.

The M3 is about $800 faster, handles about $4k better, and has a $1500 better differential. In all fairness, it is also significantly larger, but I don't need the extra size. It also has an M badge, and a lovely engine. I see the price difference as unjustifiable.

Though, I think it speaks volumes about this car that people see it as the next closest thing, enough so that M3 fans feel threatened enough to make posts like this. You should see some of the stuff on other BMW boards! It's pretty funny, makes it harder for me to wait for a car that's made everyone from the Evo/Sti crowd to the $70k bimmer buyers nervous.

PS: I may be a poor douche bag, but I am satisfied that I made the best choice given the amount I wanted to spend (~$40k).

There are many who will agree with you Chuck, and I'm one (not the douchebag part :biggrin.

I seems to me that the E9x M3 is no longer an "American" M car (I've owned 9 M cars). It's ideally suited to, surprise! -- use in Germany or Europe. I just can't see fighting physics in that 3650 lb. car around a track, but it is ideal for autobahn high speed cruising and sweepers. YMMV.
