Recall: External Artificial Sound Generator (Dec 22, 2023)

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Just notice this recall. I think it is i5 EV only.

-------
Dec 22,2023
Manufacturer Recall NumberNA
NHTSA Recall Number23V885
Recall StatusRecall Incomplete
Summary
EXTERNAL ARTIFICIAL SOUND GENERATOR: Potentially affected vehicles may not generate the external artificial sound at low vehicle speeds, e.g., while slowing down at an intersection, and therefore may not meet a Federal requirement.

Safety Risk
This could increase the risk of injury to certain pedestrians who may need this sound to be aware of a nearby vehicle (such as when accelerating / decelerating near an intersection).

Remedy
Vehicle software will be updated for free, and should take about an hour.

you're hilarious. BMW doesn't do those (Yet they give the illusion they do). They are so sparse, infrequent, and months behind the ISTA release of the software (If you are personally lucky enough to meet all the qualifications to receive an "OTA" update).

I only get update on my mom's i4 .... my i7 and my wife's iX have never receive an in-app "OTA" update

In case it qualifies as precedent: My former i4 had its equivalent recall corrected at the dealership.

I would expect the same to be true for i5.

Thank you. I was waiting for this one. My i5 is appreciably inaudible at low speeds unless it's backing up.

Thanks for the PSA. This is why I think there needs to be a resource highlighting all of these software updates and recalls in one place, because, otherwise, many i5 owners wouldn’t know this campaign exists.

Notably, this recall does not (yet) show up for my i5 in http://bmw-recall-tool.netlify.app/

This was the reason for the stop sales for the i5 cars. It will be updated at the dealership before you can take delivery. For those that had their cars already you will need to visit the dealership for the update.

While in reverse, there is a very prominent and not great "beep beep beep". But I have no audible noise at low speed moving forward, like my i4 and i3 did!

I took delivery of my M60 on 12/30/24....so apparently there was no recall update available or the dealer did not do it :/

So not making an appt for this; sorry BMW. I will wait until I actually need a Service visit.

Their "should take an hour" is total BS. They make you leave your car with BMW Service for the entire day to do any software.

I hear a fairly strong sound while reversing but not while moving forward.

Same with me, there is for sure a backup warning. Have not really noticed anything while moving forward. I have an appointment for a software update on 12 Jan, will update what I find out.

Thank you, Richard! That page shows 0 open recalls on my vehicle. It must have been addressed in the stop sale update.

Do not think it is going to be a typical recall from what I see. They will fix it when you bring the car in.

Considering BMW has issued this same exact recall on both the i4 and iX platforms, I think it’s time to choose a new supplier or developer.

I believe the update is done before you take delivery and if you already taken delivery just take it to dealer

why the first generation Toyota Prius came out, its fake sound generator didnt' always work. Back then, most people were caught off-guard by it. The only sound was the tire rolling noise. My co-worker who had one ended up hanging a small cowbell from the front license plate holder.

sadly, even with a fake sound generator, cats don't always get out of the way if you're backing up. my friend's mother was reversing her hybrid minivan and drove over her outdoor cat who was sunbathing just below the rear bumper in the driveway. the cat didn't make it.

we humans have domesticated the cats for thousands of years, but we still haven't managed to train them to get out of the way yet.

my friend's mother was traumatized by that accident, of course...

Oddly, I heard somewhere recently that the cat is the only animal to have domesticated itself!

actually, I believe it's the cats who have domesticated or enslaved us humans.... (and we happily accepted it!)
