2024 540i (B58) insane 28 MPG EPA fuel economy just released

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
I believe this was just posted by the EPA. Man, I really think BMW has reached the peak of ICE tuning with the B58. These efficiency numbers are unbelievable for an engine making at least 400 HP at the crank that isn't a full hybrid.

Here it is next to G30, and just for giggles the Lexus ES 250, a naturally aspirated 4-pot.

My Supra does about 20 MPG.

I'd say that's a win.

The legend, the myth, the B58! Our heavy ass G05 X5 gets 23mpg in mixed driving. And my previous F32 440i got 27mpg in mostly highway driving (with a heavy foot). Seriously remarkable engine.

B58 should be considered an all-time engine if not already.

Probably better in real world conditions. At least that’s been my experience. Also, next/last gen b58 will probably squeak out a bit more with PDI.

The secret sauce for BMW is usually the eco pro mode (which the EPA does not test against, they test in comfort, as it is the default drive mode).

Eco pro allows you to coast efficiently, which can help at low speeds city traffic and a bit at highway as well.

In eco pro on my M340i, I can easily get into the low to mid 30s mixed. High 30s mostly highway. Even hit 41 once briefly during a highway drive. For a nearly 400HP engine with no hybrid powertrain beyond a 48v MH, that’s impressive.

I have a screenshot somewhere of my 2016 340xdrive getting 35.5 average on a 600 mile road trip with AC on. Amazing.

B58? My N63 gives me 30 mpg on the highway when there's no traffic (actual calculation). Now that's impressive!

I can not understand why people admire B58 that much. It is not any better than all other modern BMW engines. For me even the B47 is better engine, not significatly of course. I can not see why ovations. By the way mine M340iX is at 19,3mpg for 35.000 miles - not bad at all.

It’s not just the fuel economy, it’s everything about the B58 - power output, tuneability, reliability and the actual application across multiple vehicles in different classes. There’s very little more you can ask for when it comes to the B58. The B58 is everything you think of when it comes to BMW and engine making and what you would want out of any engine.

Yeah B58 is such a fuel efficient motor. Just recently traded my 23 M340i Xdrive in, I consistently averaged 34-35mpg and have even touched over 36mpg on little longer trips. Can’t say the same for the 24 Xdrive S58 I traded it for 😅. But hey we all make trade offs 🤷🏼‍♂️

Not BECAUSE they are fuel efficient, but most of us care that they are.
I wouldn’t have an M2 if had Dodge Challenger mileage.

My 2018 G30 plug in hybrid is averaging 49 mpg at 95k miles , so this is definitely possible with the mild hybrid technology.
