Multi-Contour Seats

Hi Folks -

I know there's been some chatter about the seats in the i5. On the M60 or eDrive40 equipped with the luxury package, is the adjustment of the upper backrest (like in the outgoing 5-series with Multi-Contour seats) possible?

I've read some about controls being present in the iDrive settings that aren't on the seat itself, so I wanted to confirm whether or not this adjustment was possible.

For tall people, it's really nice

Thanks!

Negative. It’s a multi-function seat like the iX. Not 20 way like the G30.

Please do let us know and post a pic of your seats. I've been looking all over the Internet with no luck on any of the press cars with the "luxury seating package". I'm thinking it should look like the seats in the 7, as previous generations, both the 5 and 7 share similar multi-contour seat designs. I've had the 20 way multi-contour seats since my E60 535i. BMW changed it to 18 way on the F10. The upper back adjustment is a deal breaker for me.

The i5 m60 I drove today didn't have the upper back adjustment (at least that I could find in the UI).... don't think it has that adjustment.

But I ended up ordering one anyway - it's a great car.

It’s a shame that the upper back adjustment is not included as that differentiates it from most other seats out there and really allows some fine tuning

In GER they have currently eliminated the upper adjustment.

OciWan so what adjustments do you have on these seats?
Fore/aft
Seat tilt
Backrest angle
Backrest width (side bolster adjustment)
Lumbar adjustment
Thigh support
Headrest height
Any others?
Which of these are manually adjusted, I.e. no seat or iDrive buttons ?

Those are all the adjustments I believe.

Can’t do the thigh support and side bolster with the manual buttons.

I am configuring a 540 and asked my advisor about the multifunction seats. He didn't know if they were the same as the g30 multi contour but after looking at the build code, he told me that it was the identical code to the multi contour seats of the G30. He told me he would bet the house they are the same saying that in all his experience with BMW they often change the names of features but if they make real changes the code changes. Also, the online configurator description for multi function seats says upper back is adjustable.

Seems like BMW removed the multi contour seats on the 5 and replaced it with multi function seats. Definitely no longer have the upper back adjustment and the unique pillow like headrest of the F10 and G30. Hoping they will add the seat back in later builds as BMW seems to do that with initial launch and later models.

I think you’re correct that the seats are no longer the true multi contour with articulated upper backrest. Real shame as I love these in my G30. Strange they would use the same 456 option code for different seats though.

Is the headrest height adjustment manual or electric on the ZLS seats. I see the button on the side and that seems to indicate they are now manual. That’s a step down as well. I remember my E39 5er from over 20 years ago had electric headrest height adjustment and that struck me as a real luxury differentiator over a 3 series.

The comfort seats in the g30 and I think also the case for the f10 and I think e60 aswell(?) also have active head restraints

These new seats don’t really sound like option 456 to me , rather they are something else/new

As long as they are comfortable , that’s all that’s counts but having those adjustments does help enormously

I forgot to look it up when I was ordering it... does the Luxury Seat Package in the 530i come with massaging function?

I recently bought the X1(U11). I ordered it with Active Seats for the lumbar support function, but I was pleasantly surprised at the delivery when I found out that included massaging function for both front seats. so I'm hoping the the 530i's luxury seat package has them as well... (since it's not too late for me to add it)

Thanks!

Does this mean there's no way to order the i5 or 530i/540i with massaging seats like the X1?

I'm still a newbie to BMW, but so far, the number one thing that I've learned is "nothing BMW does makes any sense" This is not available. That's not available. Or wait for SOP 3/24. Or random thing can go missing(or appear) for no reason.

Lol, so true. The ordering guide is your best bet. "....feature deletes this function". I remember starting with later F10 MY into the G30, 4 zone climate control was no longer an option in the US. Only the M5 got that feature. Also more annoying is on the G30, soft close doors were also no longer available, again only on the M5. Seems like BMW in recent years is removing more and more of the luxury options they used to offer on the 5 in hopes to get people to get into a 7 series if you really wanted those features. The newest item added to that list are the multi-contour seats with the G60. I remember seeing a 2011 535i when I got my F10 with night vision, soft close doors, multi-contour seats and 4 zone climate control.
