Hot off the presses, the top spec Dodge Challegner SRT8 with a 6.1L V8 starts at $37,995.

Details on MY2009 drivetrains was leaked about 10 days ago. Take note, 6 speed manuals (Tremec T-56 by the way) have a limited slip differential...

Is that Sedona Red? ; -) Good gawd a 3.92 rear gear in the manual cars, 0-60 timing will be interesting!! Thanks for the update on the Challenger Wolf!

Looks very good, and the pricing is excellent. I still have no desire to own one, but Chrysler has done a good job of it on paper.

Now the question is: how does it drive?

The tranny gearing makes up for the quicker rear end:

Borg Warner 6sp T-56 Gear Ratios
1st 2.66:1
2nd 1.78:1
3rd 1.30:1
4th 1.00:1
5th 0.74:1
6th 0.50:1

Nornally, a 1:1 gear ratio would be at 5th gear. This tranny uses 4th, and has 5th and 6th as two overdrive speeds.

On the 135i 6sp, it's a 3.08:1 diff and:
1st 4.06:1
2nd 2.40:1
3rd 1.58:1
4th 1.19:1
5th 1.00:1
6th 0.87:1

Damn...i love that car. My two concerns are how does it handle in regards to the 135i and what is the mpg. I'm sure acceleration times will be similiar despite the alleged 125hp difference...

ya American cars use more gears for better fuel economy not performance. almost all American trannys as they gain more gears they just gain an extra overdrive

4 speed 4th gear 1:1
5 speed 5th gear .8:1
6 speed 6th Greer .5-.7:1

The car is gorgeous though, It looks extremely similar to the originals. The gas milage will prolly be horrible so ill stick with the 1

The way Dodge dealers are you will be extremely lucky to get one for less than $5K over MSRP with their ADM crap! Most will be more than $5K I bet.

If they did their homework like Chevy .. my 2001 SS (5.7L) got 30mpg highway .. not bad at all for a V8 engine ..

See, this is why cars are such a toss up. We all know that the 1 series will crush the Challenger in many categories...fuel economy, braking, acceleration, manuverability, really just all around driving. But the Challenger has a certian style that stands out, plus if you travel or carry 3 other adults, the Challenger will be more comfortable and roomy without being SUV-like bulky. Either car will have a great residual. I'm just getting a little tired of being another A-hole in a BMW.

I'm waiting for information on the MY2009 Challneger. That's when keyless go will be available, and the 5.7L R/T gets a significantly upgraded Hemi with variable valve timing developing 375hp and significant gains in fuel economy.
Once again, all the early adoptors (in this case, lining up for the 1st year SRT8 versions) are gonna get burned.

The bad side is the company you keep. I've read the Challenger blogs, and I've never seen such a group of simpletons bitching about irrational nonsense as those guys. Its a little odd around here at times, but its a world ahead of those guys I'll assure you.

Yeah the new 5.7L has cylinder deactivation, just like the old. The SRT8 6.1L does not. Cylinder deactivation engines require a very light 5W20 oil for the actuator to function, and I'm a little skeptical of oil that thin.

Also take note, SRT variants (Caliber, Challenger, Viper...Etc.) do NOT have the lifetime powertrain warranty. So the 5.7L R/T is really going to be the way to go.

Yup. Evos and STIs have similar problems. I think Miata.net is half of why I keep buying Miatas. This place certainly helps keep me interested in the 1er. :smile:

I can see into the future and can already tell that the Camaro and Challenger are going to tempt me away from a 135i when I go to buy in a few years.

Also, I'm seeing that SRT8 Challengers will get a $2100.00 Gas Guzzler tax, bringing the actual base price up to $40,095. Ahem...I hate to sound like a broken record, but the 5.7L R/T is the way to go.

I was poking around the link from the first post, and someone was saying the R/T might be under 30k. That would make things interesting -- but considering the source.....

It looks like it would hold more dead bodies in the trunk than a 135i/128i. That's got to count for something.
