Can anyone tell me how does the 3 series fare as compared to the 1 series? Especially since the 1 series engine had twin turbo and the 328i does not. Thanks

Thanks NJKSC27, I am in the market for 2008/2009 328i and tried searching this forum to see if I can find some comparison that will convince me to consider the 135i. I wasn't able to find any details, would you mind helping me by giving some direction to postings that you know of? Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the reply bavarianbutcher, so why would someone buy a 135i when the pricing and features are available in the 328i or if not 335i?

it's more of an enthusiast's car. People looking at the 135i instead of a 328i want the motor and the brakes and suspension that comes standard on the 135i. The six piston brakes for example, are not even offered to any of the 3 series cars. So before looking for comparisons, you should really ask yourself what your looking for in a car. What will you do with a car?

I am buying this car as my wife's primary car, but I'd like to get what I want when I drive it too. Basically, I am looking at safety (BMW has great handling), performance (don't really need it as much, but want to have), durability (German make), name (BMW)

Do you think I will need the piston brakes? I don't even know what they're supposed to do or the value of having them. What would make me buy a 335i versus 328i (I understand more HP and everything) but do you notice that in everyday driving? I assume current members know more than me and would appreciate if you could help me out.

hrmm.. I would suggest the 330i. It's a good compromise between civility and performance. The 135i is more of a sports car.

Are you going to do any racing events(road course, autox, etc.) If not, then no.

The 335i is more of a GT(grand touring) and a whole different animal.
The 328i would be more reliable and cost effective in the long run.

I would suggest you go to the dealer and spend a day test driving different models.

328i sedan is best mix of economy, practicality and very nice performance. Just a hunch from what you've posted, but it seems like that'd fit.

Unless your wife is seriously into cars and going fast, the 135i is probably too much car for someone who doesn't care that much, and the 328i is enough car to really enjoy if you drive it once in a while.

If a smaller car with little usuable rear seating is OK, the 128i probably makes sense and should be a bit cheaper than the 328i.

No problem, i dont think their is direct comparison. But you need to figure what your looking in for a car. Size, price, performance, uniqueness, et...

of course this forum will be biased but the 1 series is a landmark car for bmw in the US. Most of us here are car enthusiasts, and look forward to being part of year one of the 1. the 1 series will released to a US market with basically no other vehicles in comparison. Not an STI, Evo, acura, nissan, etc... What i am trying to say is that the hype is for a reason. not to mention the incredible bang for the buck of the 1er (135i), but the car symbolizes a new movement in car design in the US in my opinion.

Their is a reason the 3-series is always winning awards year after year....and thats why BMW took the design and engine development into their new 1 series. The 328 is of course a great car but the 1 series is a whole different ball game. a car with performance and luxury that has never been accomplished in the US market, in my opinion, before. Look at the member, "Theultimatedriver" posts, Their are highly informative and give just a glimpse of the 1er. if you are concerned wait it out till the car arrives for test drives. It looks like the allocation numbers will be higher then we thought anyway.
