Generic question. Bmw will have produced a number of pre production cars to both test their build processes and for showing at motor shows and launch events
The specs of these may differ to what is finally offered
Quality may not be 100% potentially.
What happens to these once production cars are around?

Are they sold to the public, scrapped?
Just curious

this, I think I remember seeing an article on BMWblog a few months ago where they actually showed pre-production cars and other prototype vehicles being dismantled for scrap.

I did like the episode when Cliff went on Jeopardy, that's a classic.

You can actually watch it now in better quality then when first broadcast as it was shot on film so you can now watch it in HD ( as opposed to SD)

In my old business (consumer durable goods) the cost of pre-production run units was factored into the development program costs as they were not sellable units due to a variety of factors. They may be used for various subsystem tests prior to being scrapped. Assume it would be similar for BMW.

At least some if not all of the Pre-production cars are sold to the public.

I'm on the hunt for an F80 M3 and have come across a pre production model that had very low mileage for its first few years and was then sent back to Germany to have some work done before being sold in the UK. I even contacted BMW who said the car is perfectly road legal.

Probably one to avoid though.
