Side view comparison: G60 vs. G30 5 Series

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Made the side view comparison below from official spec sheets, G60 vs. G30

I think the most interesting part is the seating positions (red line). The base of the seating surface on G60 is obviously higher than G30 due to the thickness of the battery pack. To maintain the same front seat headroom, the roofline, hood, front fascia, and shoulder lines are all raised accordingly. See how the rear seats in G60 are comparatively higher? Again we have the battery pack to thank.

The tip of the trunk actually share the same height (blue line). Visually this gives the G60 a more drooping tail line since the rear window base sits higher.

Good work, thanks for putting it together and sharing.

Noticing your render compared M-sport G60 vs 'non-M-sport' G30 (presumably the M-sport G30 is even lower). Taking cues for the front bumper to determine M-sport or non M-sport variant.

Also notice how the door height has increased more than the glass window, making the car proportions odd from side-profile.

Confirming my original hypothesis of the new 5 looking like the old F10 era 5GT in ride height

You are exactly right about the variants.

Given that the G60 seats are elevated by the battery, BMW has 2 options to keep the same headroom: increase the door height, or increase the window/greenhouse height. Both would offset the proportions, but objectively I think the former is the lesser of the 2 evils.

Now I'm really curious how Porsche managed to keep the Taycan so low. Probably used denser (and more expensive) battery packs.

I believe the reason they were able to keep the car so low is that the Taycan was designed to be electric and the battery pack housing is a structural part of the car. The i5 is basically a retrofitted ICE car.

Is the G60 really 5060mm long? That comes out to 199.2 inches...which is about the same as my AMG GT and longer than a Panamera. The 8 series GC is like an inch longer.....

That would be a huge increase from the last gen and most "mid-size" luxury cars.

its 3.8 inches longer and like 1.5 inches taller. G60 vs G30

additionally, not sure how specific those measurements are above but on the g60 the 1033 is from the back of the seat to the roof while the 1034 on the g30 is from the front of the seat to the roof.

Yep, and it's about a full 200mm longer than the old E60 which by no means was a small car. I'm amazed at how HUGE all vehicles are these days compared to just 10-15 years ago, and this isn't just a BMW phenomenon.

Wow, it's crazy how this happened over the last 10-15 years, and cars did not get any bigger in the 10-15 years before that! Or wait, maybe that's always been the case?

1. The E60 seems to be 4841-4855 mm in length according to Wikipedia, so rather 150-165mm shorter and not "a full 200mm".

2. If you go back another three 5er generations you end up at the E28 which had a length of 4620mm. So the difference between the E28 and the E60 is even larger (220mm) than between the E60 and the G60!

Taller front belt line and 60mm more front overhang. This explains why it looks so awkward. One more step in this direction and it will look like a FWD car. Ugh.

It is a bulbous, hideous, jellybean. The G30 looks like a missile while the G60 is simply a beluga.

Lord, please give these designers the sense of grace to make the M5 right.

Well, I owned an F90 M5 (based on G30) and every time I drove it it felt “normal” size from the driver’s seat, while driving. Then I’d get out of it, look back at it and think “Man, this car is huuugh!”

Can’t imagine what the new G60 will feel like! Is “monstrous” a good approximation? Has it surpassed the size of the Bangle E65 7-series yet? (2002-2008). Anyone have the stats?

My eye tells me the G60 is bigger than the E65

Awesome post OP.

The height and the styling to cover it are interesting. Overall its an attractive design and I look forward to seeing in the metal.

I do fear where this is all heading (crash protection rules etc) and its impact on car design.

The H70 next Gen 5er is on track to be

5m16 CM length
Have a 1m front overhang

The 'stubby nose' of BMW designs from the much earlier 3 series' is what I really miss.

That black plastic along the sills is going to get damaged very easily surely
Stone chips / swirl marks you name it
Would need ppf no doubt to keep it looking new
Would it also trap water ( and salty water in winter) between it and the bodywork!
Are bmw setting themselves up for rusty cars in later years there?

I’d like to think they’ve thought all of this through but I wonder. They test cars over a period of a few years but not for the length of time that people actually own them.

It’s essential though for the visual trick of the car’s elongated silhouette. Otherwise the doors will start looking very 5GT height.

E60 overall length: 4843mm
G60 overall length: 5060mm

5060mm minus 4843mm equals 217mm. She's a big gal.
