G60 Panorama Glass Roof

I don’t get the trend of having glass roof without possibility to tilt and open. Whole point of sunroof is to open it, to have fresh air or to hear outer sounds. Fixed glass roof has no point at all. Cabin gets heat much more too.

Agreed I use my sunroof a lot and this has to be one of my least favorite trends among new vehicles. What's worse is half of them don't offer a shade either.

How do you compete with Tesla in China?

According to Autogefuhl, the US market will get the option for a "normal" glass sun roof that will tilt and open.

See video here at the 8 min, 15 sec mark:

Presumably the glass blocks UV to reduce heating up the inside but even so , surely that’s going to make the air conditioning have to work harder?

Heat comes from IR (infrared) in the solar spectrum. Pano glass should likely have ~100% UV protection, tint would avoid some IR.

That’s not just like that. It reduces in comparison with clear glass. But heats much more than metal roof with insolation. And for God’s sake why glass without opening.

My AMG GT has a pano roof that does not open.....I do wish it did but it's not a huge deal.

The 8 series GC has one that opens and it opens like 6 inches.....it's almost not even worth it.

I'm just glad that an open-able option exists!

Now where are those soft-close doors?

There has been a parts/chip shortage on the 7 series for soft close doors option, they may release it on the new 5 but I would not hold my breath.

It’s not a must have option (at least for me).

You seem truly flummoxed as to why one would want a non-opening panoramic roof ("NOPR") as opposed to an opening panoramic roof ("OPR"). I'm happy to provide some current and historical insights you may not have considered:

1. One can already obtain plenty of air and/or can hear plenty of outside sounds from opening any number of windows;

2. Aesthetics/Headroom. Whether it be from the physical angle of a tilted OPR breaking a roof line, or (as in the old days like from my 80s Mazda) a mechanical circular crank -- even though BMW might have optimally engineered their OPR -- many still associate OPRs with extra roof encumbrances, lack of roof "flow," and diminished headroom. A fixed NOPR suffers from virtually none of this;

3. OPRs can leak -- admitting water into your vehicle -- through any initial or gradual misalignment, damage, and/or normal wear and tear over the years. Fixed NOPRs have comparatively no opportunity for this; and of course

4. Many of us simply enjoy the extra glow inside the cabin (and don't care for the accompanying wind or its annoying whistling or whooshing air sounds (and happily, i5s optional "Sky Lounge Roof" is roughly 150% the size of the OEM "Moonroof").

I hope this helps broaden your understanding. :-)

1. You can not drive on the highway with opened windows, at least new G generation. It is too much wind noise and wind.
2. You don’t care about air flow when You want fresh air feeling.
3. Everything can leak. Todays moonroofs are very well constructed.
4. I agree that many od You enjoy glowing, that’s fine but many of us don’t. I just want roof window and I don’t want to drive greenhouse. Why don’t they make both options for us such different people?!

It IS a bit ironic: Here in the USA, we have the option of both the opening and the fixed pano roofs, but only the fixed is available in Europe. HA - Maybe you and I should just switch countries.

In any event, it sounds like you know what you want. Hope that works out for you somehow.

That’s interesting that EU market have only fixed glass. I think that have something with CO2 footh print (our bureaucracy sniffs glue You know). That want to save planet You can expect soon that side windows will be fixed.

We had soft close doors on our X5 years ago but I skipped adding on my 540i. Not missing it. Genuinely curious why this is important? Our kids are grown so they don’t slam doors anymore. Maybe that’s part of it? I love a sunroof but my wife never uses hers so I get it could be something like this.

I've had the panoramic roof in 3 Teslas, our Polestar, and our Mach-e. None have shades. The Teslas and Polestar get ridiculously hot inside... even the glass is hot to the touch. The Mach-e must have better UV protection because it gets warm, not hot. Either way, I'm skipping it this time around. It offers no real advantage to the driver. Even my kids in the back could care less about the glass roof. It's something everyone is chasing Tesla on but the real reason Tesla includes it in the 3/Y is because it allows more rear head room in the rear.
