You can see the limitations from this platform not being pure EV. Despite being longer than an iX, they couldn't fit the 111.5kwh battery in the G60 package.

It's an animated GIF but since you can't see it I'll describe what it shows as succinctly as I can. The entire powertrain morphs from ICE to a fat bloated pig.

Very efficient use of space as they could fit ofcourse. Where is the battery for mild hybrid powestrains? Is that one in the back behind rear axle of small enough that not visible.

Wonder if something changed from that standpoint w.r.t. existing I-6 mild hybrid 540 G30 chassis.

Haha. The size of the (inefficient) battery pack is the main cause, I think.

They “couldn’t” fit it? Or they just “didn’t” fit it? Unless they flat out stated “the largest battery we could fit was this one” then I would fathom a guess that making sure there was no impinging on the (much more expensive) i7 was as much or more of a driving factor in the battery capacity decision as space was.

That would happen when they try to make an electric car based on the chassis of an conventional car.
It will have a hard time to complete with cars that are made purely based on electric platform (practicality , weight, design), mainly upcoming new Tesla S.

I'm not sure you'd call the iX a properly designed EV. No maximization of space, just a big house with small interior.

This is impressive to see the packaging. For BMW, offering EV as just another choice for a model would be a good idea. No need to have a dedicated EV platform. So ICE regular and M, PHEV regular and M and full EV regular and M….the top end model would be the Hybrid M.

Of course it will compete with the Tesla. It may lose some of the EV battles, but it will outsell it everywhere that EVs aren’t practical or received well. That is the whole idea, hedging your bets for the next 7-8 years.

It's amazing that given the space the ICE takes up,...that there isn't a thought to add any "Frunk" space. Also, I have to admit,...and based on the animation, the ICE setup appears to be way more complexed than the BEV setup! Surprising!!!

They should have skipped the iX and just provided a Full EV G05 X5! The model lineup would look like this:

X5 40i (...ICE as we know it)
X5 45e (current PHEV as we know it)
X5 50e (current PHEV as we know it)
X5 M50i (current ICE as we know it)
X5 M60i (current ICE as we know it)
X5 M55ie (new Full BEV Model,...Dual Motors)
X5 M60ie (new Full BEV model,...Dual Motors and more power)
X5 M70ie (new Full BEV model,...Tri-Motors,...with crazy power! There would be 1 motor up Front and two motors in the Rear.

This is what BMW should have done! No one asked for an iX model. BMW has to realized that their loyal customers want their BMW to look like a BMW first and foremost vs some new look they're not accustomed to.

Just imagine the $million$ in R&D spent on the iX,..that could have been allocated to the X5 and X7 chassis! Also, speaking of the X7, I may as well add what the X7 lineup would look like to this post:

X7 40i (current ICE as we know it)
X7 45e (new PHEV model)
X7 50e (new PHEV model)
X7 M50i (current ICE as we know it)
X7 M60i (current ICE as we know it)
X7 M55ie (new Full BEV Model,...Dual Motors)

Be careful what you wish for. As can be seen with the new 5er, BMW optimizes more for BEV exterior (drag coefficient) than ICE (long hood etc.). So a BEV-ified X5/X7 would probably look very much like the iX, maybe with a different grille. Current generation X5/X7 are just too bulky to get decent range i guess (though one could argue that BMW tried with the X3/iX3, but the latter does not seem to be home-run when it comes to range).

Hmm, I don't think so. For instance, BMW used the chassis of the 440 Gran Coupe for the i4 40i / i4 M50i. This had to be eazy-peasy for them to do. So, adding a single motor or dual eMotors the chassis of the current X5/X7 would be very easy to do. That's why I said they really didn't need to dump all that money into the iX.

Now, I'm prolly just speaking for myself,...but I'd take the X5's design over the iX all day long.

Lastly, I know BMW doesn't want to hear this,...but that upcoming Chevy eBlazer design language looks very promising! ijs

Sure, you can put the motor in, CLAR allows for that; the question is: Does it make sense? The X5/X7 are US-centric vehicles, and everytime BMW releases a BEV, people in here claim there's not a enough range for their cross-country road trips.

Also, the 4er GC is a gran coupe, which is much more efficient from a drag coefficient than a SUV/SAV.

Yeah.

I did not realize this until now, but it looks like the next generation of X5 and X7 will make your wishes come true, i.e. the iX5/X5 and iX7/X7 will be the same chassis, similar to the i5/5 and iX3/LWB X3. Let's wait and see whether those will be more BEV or ICE optimized.
