Does anyone have a lot of experience with Dell laptops?
I have recently been sent a newer 13 inch xps and an newer 15 inch... both of which are top of the line and cost a lot of money thru my work. I can confidently say this is the biggest load of garbage that I think I've seen since the HP days after that compaq merger. The first 13 inch had its security chip fail on day 1 during startup and went into recovery mode. Then it would overheat on every teams call that I would take since they tried to give it a cool case like a mac. That one got sent back and I got a new 15 inch... This one felt better, a bit quicker and seemed to work overall cleaner. Fast forward 1 week, and today my external monitor base wouldn't connect to it and the computer couldn't hold a charge. Then I plug in the regular dell adapter and the same happens lol... the fucking thing can't charge. Oh and this beast of a workstation has a 2hr battery life... what is this 1995? Now before being called a mac fanboy as I understand all brands have their issues but 2 failures in a row is abysmal and unthinkable on any of my macs. I think it just goes to show how many lightyears the apple arm architecture, cooling case design and processing efficiency of apple machines is... today I felt like I went 20 years back. Thank you that is all.

I have a bunch of experience with Dell laptops that have lasted 5+ years. Definitely sounds like a 2022 problem. I even have some old D610s from 2010 that are still plugging away.
My experience has been the exact opposite of yours with many friends having MacBooks that have had major problems. 1) Incorrect GPU Paste on MacBook Pro - had to disable the kexts to get MacOS to boot and use the Intel integrated GPU. A class action lawsuit ended up getting Apple to fix this. 2) Fan failure and overheating due to bad fan venting directly on display design 2) Dead motherboards/CPUs (I suspect from overheating though unsure) I think Apple's move to ARM has helped tremendously with how difficult they found cooling their Intel chips in their case design. A move from CISC to RISC will absolutely net a power efficiency gain, it just depends on your use case whether that raw power to efficiency tradeoff makes sense. Also with Intel's new big.Little (cough Samsung) architecture we'll see how efficient heavy duty Intel CPUs will become. |

I have used Dell for the past 10 years at work. While there are issues here and there, overall they have been great.
The HP contract we got, well... not so good. I will say that the USB-C docking stations that we first received were garbage. Would just randomly not connect, wouldnt charge, displays would not work, etc. I forget which model we had at first, but now we use the WD19TB and see far less issues.

Ive been using Dell's for over 20 years and while they have had their share of issues I think for the most part the experience has been good. I do get the in home protection so if the board fails they come right to my house to replace. I am getting two new ones next month will let you know if they are problematic both laptops. I usually keep mine around 4 years and then upgrade

Eff Dell there and back again. They hosed me with a warranty repair a few years ago and sent it back worse than I sent it in. Never again!
