I've been enamored with the idea of owning a 911 for sometime now. It seems like the natural progression coming from E9X, or a great stablemate.

I drove a 991.1 C2S PDK a few years ago and was left completely underwhelmed. The PDK is nice, but lacks the drama the E9X 7 speed box gives. Very linear power curve but didn't feel fast. This car was for sale at $62k at the time(late 2020), now that same car would be 80. Insane.

Since then I've driven a couple 991s, and a 992 C2S. The only car that gave my willy a tickle was a base C2 manual 991.2. Now with the P car market going to the moon, I don't see the value in these cars with this market(paying retail for a 4-5 year 911 is just madness IMHO).. I've always lusted after the GT cars(mainly the 997 and 991.2 manual), but holy moses, the prices on those have gone MAD.

However, I'm hoping to get into a 991.2 Carrera T manual at some point, realistically in the next 2-3 years. Hoping the values come down a bit. Otherwise I'm looking into a different sports car or GT car for a weekend cruiser, and occasion HPDE companion.

What do y'all think? What would you buy with a $100k budget? Overpriced 911, V8 R8 manual, Aston?

997 turbo/Turbo S/GTS or 991 GTS. The 991.1 generation with an aftermarket exhaust sounds way better than stock and makes a huge difference. Highly recommend driving a 997 car if you haven’t yet, they feel substantially different than the 991. I had a 997.2 C4S that wasn’t insanely fast (4.0-ish 0-60) but was a lot of fun and the car is the perfect size.

GT4 or Boxster Spyder, 718 4.0. The 981 GTS is a lot of fun but not all that fast, 4.3-ish 0-60

F430 is a little over your budget but should also hold its value really well

I didn't care for any of the 911s until I drove a GT3. Then I drove a TTS that was modified and I cared.

Otherwise, if I had to stay in that lower bracket I really like the Caymans. The mid-engine balance is really fun but it's more of a corner or momentum car than a tear your face off car.

I had a very restrictive criteria. I wanted naturally aspirated, convertible, analog and 2+2 seating at the least. This left me with Camaro, Mustang, E92 M3 and 997.2. I went with the 997 basically to get it out of my system, a well sorted E92 was not much cheaper TBH but I may settle on that if running 3 cars wears me out.

I found the 997 and 991's TOTALLY different cars. The 991 is "better", more capable, more comfortable, more everything except a touch lighter but it just looks big and bit too GT in nature vs the "ox-cart" 997.

If I wasn't doing a cab, absolutely hands down for me the clear winner is a GT350, just avoid the 16's. FWIW at your budget in $USD, i'd do a 997 GTS. I will say, I bought a car that had a small front end incident, lopped a SOLID 15K or more off the price. I realise I will need to price accordingly when selling it but the car drives true, the frame is straight and the price point excellent for a 13 yr old car with just 40,000 miles.

Left of field options are the Jaguar XKR-S (hard to find) and Maserati Gran Turismo. I really like the masser but the cab is MONUMENTALLY heavy. IF you can cop 2 seats, you have a LOT of options I did not.

IMO Porsche are wildly overrated.
I am sure they are amazing vehicles on a racetrack with incredible handling.
how many owners actually take it there and use it on a racetrack? close to 0?
I live in Los Angeles where Porsche is such a status symbol. When I see a $150k+ Porsche and see who is driving it, it is almost always an 75+ year old man.
Especially with the inflated used (and new) car prices right now, even considering a Porsche is a complete joke to me.

I could afford one and I have zero interest.

It's taken some time for me to realize in this city of LA with so much traffic all the time, it is near impossible to enjoy a sports car in any capacity unless you are going for a "midnight drive" - in which case my complaint is how hard it is to see at night while driving, I'm getting old, and I'm only 38!

I'd honestly say maybe take a backward step, i honestly cannot imagine wanting anything more capable than what I have got, i mean a T is nice but it's be double the price of a nicely sorted 997.2 'S', that's a LOT of money for not a lot more car. Sometimes simple is best.

I actually owned one of these for a short time last year, not sure why but it didn't really grab my attention. Short wheelbase and monstrous torque was quite hairy to get used to as well great little car tho, but went back to E9X with zero regret.

They are the best street sports car on the planet, there is a reason they've been on top of the game for so many years and widely regarded as the best without getting into exotic territory, and even then you could argue the 911 is more practical all around than any exotic. It's also incredible how they can take one car and make so many variations of it that drive so differently from each other, all while differentiating the lineup enough and continually improving upon near-perfection that the value of these cars never seems to dip after the initial hit. Every generation has its own feel, its own appeal to a certain set of buyers, etc. One of the best things about driving a 911 is that if you buy the right car you can basically drive it for free until you're ready for the next one. I've owned 4 including two 991.1 S, a 997.2 4S, and a 991.1 GT3 and overall I've made about $30k profit combined even after all repair and maintenance expenses.

I don't think they are overrated, but... then again. I bought an X3 m40i instead. hahaha....

I wanted to love the E92, but it's just so heavy. No matter what I did I could never get it to feel like a fun car, it was always so luxurious and serious. Glad it worked better for you. The M2, to me, is a hoot.

This was actually the big issue for me to take the plunge. Everything else I was looking at was well over 1700kg, some were 1900kg. My 997 is under 1400KG, that is a massive difference in driving behavior.

Well, trying to go to the intention of the OP title, aren't they w the RR setup, or else why isn't that the standard for supercars? Porsche has locked-down that segment so no other carmaker will bother to try as it's nearly impossible to dethrone them, but it's not the best setup for performance.

How does value not factor into a car being overrated? Dollar to performance ratio matters.

Different strokes for different folks. 911 is my goal DD one day, hopefully within the next decade.

Alternatives? Maybe a higher end Cayman variant, or a CPO V8 Vantage.

I agree that driving in LA sucks, but a good handling car is always fun. And we have PCH, Malibu canyons, Mulholland drive, etc. literally right there. Doesn't have to be midnight to enjoy those. A couple weekends ago at 6pm I randomly went up to Mulholland and had a blast, then dinner/nightlife in the city.

You're right, but the OP was just complaining that he couldn't swing it atm, not that it wasn't worth it. At least that's my impression of his rant haha.
