Need some legal advice
So 3 years ago, I attended orientation at NIU (Northern Illinois University) because I planned on transferring there.
I picked out classes but never enrolled in any. Last night I get a letter in the mail stating I have an unpaid balance of $5,885. How do I owe money when I never even attended the school or even enroll in any classes? I can't come up with $6,000 out my a** Is there a way to dispute this charge? I never signed anything that stated I enrolled in classes. They also charged me $85 for a parking ticket to park in the school parking lot when I never attended the school. |

An attorney may charge you more than the charges. Good luck. |

Like the person above said, call them 1st could just be a mistake. No sense in worrying just yet. Good luck!

I called them and they said I last attended the school on Oct 30th, 2021. That's not possible. I was working.

Advice:
1. Call them and listen intently. Take notes. Say nothing, ask only questions. 2. Ask your friends and family for an attorney reference. With respect, both sides of the entire story have not yet been presented in this thread. |

That said, a car message board is almost a bad of a place to ask for legal advice as a gun Forum. |

This situation is not one that would merit a lawyer. Talk it out or write a check. |

What's worse, some schools will grade no-show students with an F or zero as their final grade! Others will enter their final grade as something like AW (administratively withdrawn), which I believe still lets the school collect against the student's financial aid package.....

Good first lesson in business. Dont sign a contract and forget to uphold it.
It sounds like you are in the wrong here and the school likely has the right to go after you for the bill. Your only recourse here is to realize that the power dynamic has shifted from you to them and to act accordingly. As others have said, phone them up and see if you can work out a deal, or at least a payment plan. Be super polite and admit you made an honest mistake. Ask them to work with you as you are in a tough spot financially and would appreciate their assistance and understanding in the matter. |

But with all that money OP is rolling in with his car sales, this should be chump change.
Just kidding man! Seriously though, I have to side with those that have suggested you call them up, if not visit them in person and plead your case, politely. If you're an a-hole with them, you may as well write the check right now. I don't have a good feeling about this however as it definitely sounds like you were at fault here, no matter how you look at it. It's painful growing up, huh? |

3 years after orientation was the first time you were contacted about owing money?
