Anyone went from "practical" car to "sports" car and....

this is my question.

You are driving a 335i 4door.
-Relatively fast, good looking, practical, roomy enough, ride is not too harsh, innovative electronics.

You sold it, and bought a Porsche 911.
-Pure driving machine, drooling-look, NOT practical, NOT comfortable, NOT technologically up there in terms of gizmos and electronics.

Anyone who experienced similar stuff? Regret?

From my 330i 4door, Im looking at 2-seater softtop convertible cars.
Only thing really holding my back is... would I be able to survive without a practical car?
Keep in mind, it'll be my daily driver.

Definitely depends on your life track at the moment. Do you possibly see yourself having children in the near future? Financial stability, job security, things like that matter the most in decisions like these... but you only live once and sometimes pulling the trigger is just ten times more fun

For a two seat soft top convertible I would go Mazda MX-5. Those things are fun!

Which car are you looking at?

I notice you live in OR, my main complaint with roadsters would be visibility in the rain with the top up.

I have a Boxster S, and I think it is one of the most practical 2 seaters on the market, but I don't think I would choose it as my only car...Cayman S, yes.

I do think that everyone should have a good roadster before they die.

A 911 is actually pretty comfortable and pretty equal in terms of electronics unless you use ipod integration. It's considered the everyday sportscar because of its reasonable practicality (as in, its easy to drive at low speeds and your briefcase will fit somewhere).

I would drive one everyday though. I'd have to have a second car. I feel like daily driving a porsche is sacrilege unless you have a ferrari or something that turns the 911 into your beater.

With that said... you just said an E90 has innovative electronics. Hahahahahahaha.

My friend, you need to go drive something japanese. Come back to me when you witness a TPMS that can actually tell you what the tire pressure is.

I always though 911's were one of the most practical sports cars ever made?

And imo, fuck technological nannies on a car. I'm fucking sick of all the bullshit. I don't need any of that.

Back in August I sold my E90 330i after 2 years and got a Z4 M Coupe.
Practical...? not always.
Financially responsible...? hell no.
Worth it...? every time I sit behind the wheel.

I'm fortunate that I have a Civic sedan as a daily driver plus my gf drives an Explorer, so the M is my fun weekend car. But that has more to do with me wanting to limit the miles I put on it and not spend a fortune on fuel; rather then being unable to use it as a DD. It's easy enough to drive, roomy enough for my needs, and it's not a compromise... it's a sports car.
I loved my E90, and will most likely look at another one down the road for a daily driver. But it doesn't even compare to the M in terms of putting a smile on your face. And really, isn't enjoying life what really matters.

Hi there, you must be new. My name's epbrown, and welcome to my life.

In 2000, my sole car was a 1983 Porsche 911 targa, driven year round in Chicago. By 2002, I also owned a 1983 Porsche 944 and 1983 Porsche 928S. :

In 2005, amidst complaints from my then-gf that I spent most of my free time fiddling with my Porsches, I sold all three and bought newer, more practical toys, a 2003 325i and 2003 Z4 2.5i:

I liked both cars, but craved a performance bump. I'd all but decided to get an E46 M3 convertible when BMW combined the dramatic looks of the Z4 with the award-winning performance of the M3. I originally planned to get an M Roadster with optional hardtop, but as a concession to Chicago winters and desiring a bit of a change and more exclusivity, I went with the 2007 M Coupe.

Things may be slightly different in my situation. I'm in a large urban area, so I have alternatives if I don't want to use my M Coupe. Being single also helps, as does having friends with SUVs. Mostly, my biggest suggestions for someone planning to run a sports car as their daily driver would to consider where you'll park it and what your winters are like.

I went from an E90 335 to an 04 Honda S2000, had the 2 cars together for 3 months so I could really drive them back to back. I ended up selling the S2k and buying my 335 off-lease. Apples to oranges..but there really is something special about a German car, especially a BMW. If I could have afforded it I would have gotten a Boxster S, who knows I still might have wanted back in my 335.

A base 911 is both practical and comfortable IMO. It has a back seat that is just as useless as my E92, and the suspension is at least as comfortable as any E9x on coilovers. I think that a 911 would make a great daily if you don't need to use the back seat everyday. Although, I would need a GT3 for an ideal daily driver.

BTW, I went from a turbo s2000 to my current 335, which is like going from a bare bones sports car that is pretty harsh/raw to a comfortable daily driver, and sometimes I really regret it. A 911 would be a good compromise between a 4 door sport touring car, and a sports car IMO. I didn't think that it was all that raw feeling when I drove one.
