Anyone else seeing abandoned dogs in your area?
For the second time in two weeks I've been followed by a seemingly abandoned dog while walking through the McMansion neighborhood near us. The first was a husky pup maybe 10 months to a year old. No collar or tags. He'd been seen in that 'hood for a few days. Someone finally brought him to the local shelter. Then tonight I got jumped by a lab/pitbull mix (or some such thing) that was also just a year or two old. He had a collar, but no tags. He also started following me and I couldn't shake him. I ask one of the folks who live there who had been driving by if he knew who owned this dog and he said no, it had been hanging around the neighborhood for a few days, just like the husky a week or two before.
We have cats living outside our house in shelters. I can't have a dog follow me home. I had to have Wifey come get me in the car so we could drive away. I feel bad for these dogs, but there's nothing I can do for them. We have an "animal control officer" who apparently has no real responsibilities and won't do anything with stray animals. Neither will the local sheriff's office. The local shelter is overwhelmed with COVID pets whose idiot owners decided they can't deal with them now that they're back to work. Or maybe they suddenly realize that a dog takes work and needs attention.

It seems in the UK that we like our pets more than we like people!
Can't say I've ever seen a stray cat or dog here. Although I believe there has been quite an upsurge in animals being handed in to the RSPCA post covid. Our cat of 18 years died recently...I never knew I was capable of such sadness. We got a pair of rescue kittens from the RSPCA to fill the space in our lives. They are a proper pair of (adorable) rascals. |

I's suggest calling the local TV station maybe they will run a spot on 6pm news. I did that when my former employer would not pay us back wages. Public embarrassment works some times.

probably a lot of climate. I never saw dogs or cats until moving to the south, we have feral cats everywhere and the odd stray dog. And visiting my grandparents in Memphis you see feral cats there as well. I think they just survive (and breed) better in the south, sadly if someone lets one out and nobody gets to it by winter in Kansas they are likely dead. I havent seen an uptick in dogs yet but cats are still around. I guess I should be checking the shelters, I had been contemplating getting a second dog and maybe there are a few good breeds floating around (in the city its almost all pit mixes usually). |

exactly the opposite here. On our town facebook page, daily there's posts about a dog walking a strange neighborhood, and a happy owner responds within an hour that it's theirs and thank you for finding it. about once a month a post about a dog that escaped and it's been 24 hours and there's a community coming together to search
last month there was a Burmese mountain dog that went missing and it was found dead a few days later... rumor is that coyotes got it If it ends up being a stray, or lost and animal control has a hard time finding the owner, there's always a home that will take it in as part of the family. Cats on the other hand, are a different story. There are a few colonies of ferals in town. We had about 6 in our neighborhood that the home owners across the street set up small shelter in the woods behind his house. would provide fresh water and food daily. When he sold his home, keeping the shelters and allowing him daily access to the woods behind the home was written into the sales contract. I think they're down to 1 or 2 now. our cameras catch them a few times a week hunting for chipmunks and bunnies in your yard |

people are fck stupid, hate humans sometimes, everyyear our gov have to make tv/radio commercials about that.
We dont really see it in the street because our major shelter is managed by the gov, so they pickup lost animals pretty fast. But can you imagine at the beginning of the pandemic, public and private shelters were EMPTY. Even breeders didn't have any dogs nor cat , and prices were crazy. Around 5K$ for a un-register german shepers, and 3K$ for sketchy chiwawas. People got their dogs stolen... annnnddddd semi-back to reality, shelters are full |

But it doesn't seem to help because just too many shitty cat owners that just let their cats out. Its endless here and then you see litters, creating more feral cats. |

I mean I don't live in a gated community or anything. It's just a regular ole neighborhood. But if there was a dog wandering down the street or through peoples yards there would be 10 people on the horn with dog control

There aren't any abandoned animals in my neighborhood. We have coyotes roaming at night and they are hungry and would make a meal of them.
Even if there weren't coyotes we still don't have any abandoned animals. Maybe a cat or two that people let out during the day, that's it (so not abandoned). PS - there was this one cat I thought was homeless. We called him Charlie. We don't have a dog and he used to be in our yard a lot but I don't see him anymore. |

We installed the Ring system and app this year, which comes with a community for neighbors to alert each other to stuff that's going on. Great idea in theory but…
O.M.G. Every day I'm flooded with reports of lost or found animals. Like 50 a day (I've been counting). I'm totally mystified. I've lived at my address for 15 years and I think I've helped find a lost pet maybe twice? And on one occasion, the pet actually found me - a neighbor's dog literally jumped in my car so I just drove her home. Smart girl, finding a car she actually knew after she got lost. I mean, are people around here just idiots who report all these false alarms? Or are there somehow thousands of neglectful pet owners in my community that I've somehow never met?? |
