Hello Everyone! First Post!

Going to pick up a used 2016 BMW X1 xDrive28i from Carvana this Friday and I am beyond excited. This will be my first BMW and first luxury vehicle. I've been looking everywhere trying to gather what I might be in for since I see people always commenting on the cost of ownership and reliability. From what I see this vehicle has actually scored and reviewed pretty well in it's class and in general. I was wondering if anyone had some advice, or what to expect from this BMW at this age and miles. I want to do right and take care of it, so it can last a long time and bring joy to my Fiancé and I for years to come. Seeing all the pictures and enthusiasm on this forum makes me even more excited.

TLDR: What can someone expect with a used 2016 BMW X1 xDrive28i with 42k miles

It's a BMW 4-cylinder turbo motor. What could go wrong?

in my building a very nice women has an X1, 2016 model year.

One thing that went wrong with her car was the curtain/shade for the glass roof got jammed. But she thinks it may have been her fault.

But overall she said her car has been reliable.

Please make sure it has never gone more than 10,000-miles between oil changes. Less is better. More is death on these motors. Back when BMW had a 15,000-mile oil-change interval on the 4-cyl turbo motor, their life expectancy was around 80k. The later versions with the 10k interval fared much better. Did you see the Carfax? Did you see the BMW service history report? BMW dealers can't even certify cars that have missed their required oil-service interval—for good reason!

Thanks for the feedback, I ran carfax, autocheck, and carvertical against the VIN before I ordered. It looks like it was serviced regularly. Two owners, a lease and then a certified pre owned sale. Really hoping I can get it to last longer than 80k that's rough.

Can you be more specific about "look like it was serviced regularly"? Have you verified no more than 10k between any two oil changes according to these sources?

Don't mind me but if you want a reliable BMW the '89-92 535i will run until the end of time. I just picked one up at 145k and it's cleaner inside and out (including inside the engine) than an average 5-year-old BMW-anything with the 4 banger turbo.

As someone who just bought a CPO vehicle with the same engine and year (46k) miles... I would expect many trouble free miles so long as you do your homework on prior service history (looks like you have) and continue to maintain the vehicle properly into the future.

Ive owned two N20's (2014 and 2016) and neither has given me any trouble at all other than a coolant thermostat on the 2014 that was covered under warranty. Would still be driving the 2014 if it wasn't totaled by insurance at 95k miles. Planning to keep the 2016 for 200k miles or better, knock on wood!

I change my oil every 5k miles, run the best fuel I can find (usually Shell VPower 93) and drive very easy when engine is cold, thats about it.

If you are referring to N20 engine timing chain, I think it was updated in 2016, not to mention the problem is blown out of proportion (not as common it is believed to be) and BMW has it covered until 70k miles.

x1 is a bit small, but if that's what you want go for it.

Small is a relative term. I drive a 5 series but would have preferred something smaller if I could have gotten the features I wanted in a smaller car.

Just be aware that it is basically a front wheel drive car, not a rear wheel drive car like most BMWs.

My neghbr has one and ride is not that good. I'd get 330/40 any day over x1 or x3 if suv is a must.

Having owned four E28 535i, with two still in the stable, I agree it's a tractor motor that keeps on going. But the E34 525i debuted the M50 here in the USA and the M50TU has exceeded the durability of the old M30, runs better, requires no valve adjustment, and will simply go 300k or better with literally no engine repairs. My new favorite and I have an E34, two E39s, two E82s, and an E90 with that same basic engine.

My dad has an M54 e39 wagon with almost 242k on it now, runs like a champ and pulls strong (for a 2.5) but man does it burn a ton of oil. The engine's a champ, there have been a few times that I'm driving it and it feels like there's more friction in the engine than normal, then it takes 2+ quarts to get to very bottom of the dipstick.

That is very common. Have probably replaced about 10 of them myself.

To OP, expect to replace a LOT of tires. They only seem to last about 30k km on the front.

We love ours: it does everything well. Small, nimble, easy to park, enough power to get out of its own way: it’s been great both around town and on road trips... for the 2 of us. Not bad for “the hairdersser’s BMW”. We recently added a (base) G05 X5 and at risk of sounding like a raving lunatic, I’m going to say I like driving the X1 better, mostly for handling and ride comfort. The latter may be tires: we ditched the run-flats on the X1 but still have them on the X5.

Welcome! The X1 is a decent overall car. It is essentially the same platform underneath that Mini Coopers are, mechanically etc. It should be identical underneath to the four-door Mini they make now, if I'm not mistaken.

N20 engine is decent enough, good reliability if it's a LCI(facelift) engine. I have seen some pretty nice X1 daily drivers. Nice lowering can give you the "1 series hatch" vibe, simple bolt on mods + tune. Since it's the Mini platform, there is a bit larger aftermarket than previous entry-level BMWs, which is nice. Overall, great little car. Enjoy it!
