AWD helps you go, not necessarily stop or turn if you're cooking a corner too hot.

exactly. this is why i don't understand why quattro-lovers will always say "well at least we all know audis will be faster in the rain and wet thanks to quattro". who the hell drives fast in the wet? that's stupid.
i should save this video just to counter that statement everytime it gets brought up.

Well in defense of quattro it is better in the rain. This poor driver is on the brakes hard hydroplaning. Once you are hydroplaning nothing will help - ABS or AWD. Some of the best rain driving videos showing quattro in action are the videos of the mid 90's european GT races like this:
It's long - the rain part is at 5:17 or so. Last edited by Nikolas; 10-29-2008 at 03:56 PM.. Reason: Corrected the rain time in the video |

My point is that everytime there's a Quattro (or other AWD system) vs RWD debate, the AWD crowd will always say shit like "well I can drive fast in any conditions" or they'll say that they can drive the same speeds in the rain or whatever. It's a stupid idea in the first place. It's definitely an added safety barrier, but it's not something that will defy physics.

Clearly not something to do on public roads, but in the rain, quattro can help you corner faster. Granted these race cars have a different system that has LSD on both front and rear axles which standard quattro does not. But to say AWD does not provide an advantage really is not justified by the history Audi enjoyed until they were banned from these race series. |

Quattro requires power going to the wheels to work. When you're such a bad driver to keep the wheels locked while in a slide you're just a passenger. You need the wheels rotating to steer.

I will never speed or go over 2500-3500 rpms at a fast pace in the rain no matter x drive, quattro or rwd. But lets say my wife/gf was pregnant and I needed to get to the hospital i am defiantly going to push my quattro car a little harder then normal if its raining but still i feel my skill level is on par with the speed i will be traveling at defiantly not going over 75-80mph that's where the hydroplaning comes into play hardcore but i think you guys get what im saying.
SAD to see such a great machine with a stupid driver

Anyway, everyone is correct, it can't defy the laws of physics and it's stupid to even try like these poor soul did. But instead of keeping the brake on the whole time as he did in this video if he had came off the brakes and steering out of the slide there may have been a slim chance of missing the crash altogether. The lesson is the R8 isn't the ultra safe Audi that the rest are, though it's a bit late for him to learn that lesson. |
