RS6 Avant vs M5 saloon
Well T Bone, remember your statement that the M5 was quicker than the RS6 Avant, especially on a rolling start where the awd doesn't count and I would see this happen because awd and automatic will eat up any advantage the v10tt would have over the M5's v10.
Well I see the race has been posted on Youtube and I don't hear you jumping for joy. I wonder why that might be? Gustav added 'Yes, the RS6 is also an Avant, a very large and heavy car. With 4WD and automatic the car is fast up to 140 mph. However the RS6 does not keep up its acceleration above 140 mph where the M5 almost gets a boost thanks to shorter gear ratio.' It's not what I saw, the M5 stopped the RS6 pulling any further away above this speed I it didn't look like it was gaining ground back. Maybe you needed to be in the M5 to actually see this happen and the camera wasn't giving a true reflection on the race. I will say that the M5 looked to start a tenth or two before the RS6 and it was a meter or so ahead at the start, but the end result was a sweet one for me, when I consider TB's earlier comments. |

When it's the M3 vs RS4, I think I made the right decision with the M3. But when you are talking about the M5 with over 500hp going to just the rear wheels and a gearbox which is a total disaster when not in manual mode, then I would pick just about anything else with remotely similar performance, no there is no way I would pick an M5, even if it had of being quicker it still wouldn't have gotten my vote.
The fact that it's comfortably slower than the RS6 means I know the Audi is the better car. Boring in that the tail won't step out easily but for sheer pace on a country road the RS6 would destroy the M5. Maybe I ain't a die hard BMW fans just yet that excepts an inferior product just because he love the brand more. |

No RWD = no go for me. We've discussed this before, so I won't bother delving into another one. I also fall into the crowd that enjoys the kick of the SMG gearbox. Never tried it out in the city, but I have on the track. That could make a huge difference but I can't comment. I feel like it's a DCT vs. Manual thread in some sense. You give up a few tenths to the faster system, but you get the added bonus of an improved experience and greater involvement.

But then I don't and I have lived with and learned to enjoy the fine points of Quattro and other awd cars when weather and road conditions look for a more manageable way of putting the power to the ground. I only got to drive an M5 once and can't say it warmed to me in the same way as the M3 did. The thing just felt all wrong to me, way too much power for the chassis to control on anything other than dry road conditions. The SMG felt at odd with the nature of which is a big luxury saloon to cover vast distances in comfort, the thing never feels at ease. I hope that when the next M5 arrives it comes with DCT, because it's a superior gearbox and one which will work the dual role far better than SMG ever could. I think if the current M5 had a gearbox like the RS6 it would have been a much better car for it. |

With 80 more bhp, I thought it would be a few more lengths than that. I guess it really does weigh that much.

The RS6 weighs 2025kgs (+75kgs that BMW work into their figures for driver and fluids), that makes for 2100kgs. The M5 weighs 1820Kgs, that's a whole 280Kgs less and it has a manual gearbox which slaps a lot less power along the way to the wheels. Another thing, the gear ratios of the M5 are shorter and we all know what affect that has on things.
Don't play down what Audi have achieved here, they have a car which is quicker in acceleration, handling, braking, economy, emissions and it's more luxurious and better suited to the role of sports saloon and luxury limo. Hats off to Audi, it's the second car to really stamp it's mark on a sector after the R8 did it. |

RS6 looks impressive.
I would still get an M5 though...just personal preference.

If being the fastest is all that matters to you get the Audi. But know that there will be something faster next week.
I will stick with the heritage of a BMW.

Yes you can do that. But stock for stock, RS6 has got it, though by not much. Still, faster is faster. And, that is a $40,000 mod! New M5 will settle things hopefully. This is after all a 3 year old design. If the M5 had a gearbox without so much power interruption, the race would have been closer. But I still adore that SMG3 in S6 mode.
I hope there will be an RS6 plus for the new M5. The RS6 plus is another beast.

I'd like to see a comparo vid of a stock RS6 and a chipped one. If the 335 can get about 90hp from just a chip, imagine what this thing can make.

I want to see two M3 DCT cars side by side, one in S6 mode and the other S2 just to see if the same thing happens. |
