All-in-One Car vs. SUV + Sports car?
Just wondering what everyone's opinions are on this viewpoint.
Planning on switching out the f80 m3 for something more practical as my next natural progression. But wondering if people lean more to buying a car that does it all, like an X3M or split up a daily driver and a dedicated sports/weekend car (thinking of a new Supra A91, Cayman / Boxster, C7 Corvette + an eco box like a Prius or Cheap $15k SUV to do everyday stuff). |

having more cars is always better. There is no one car that can do everything.

SUV + Sports car is the better option in my opinion.
This way you can: Haul stuff and people on vacations, have a separate car in case the other needs to be in the shop, drive in winter without worrying about salted roads, and have a wider array of sports cars to choose from.

We have an X3M40i and a Z4. The x3 is faster than the z4 by a mile. The z4 is is way more fun to drive. If we didn’t have the z4, we would be happy with just the x3 for fun, but top down gocart driving still makes me giggle after 5 years of owning the z4 and my wife won’t let me sell it.

Ive always tended to gravitate towards performance first. I need at least one street terror, either car or bike. Currently C6 Corvette for weekends and 135 for DD in the barn, both cars are performance enhanced and the wife has a Lincoln. Been thinking about moving the 135 for a SUV or PU but I still really enjoy the quick 1. When a daily still gives so much pleasure it’s hard to get rid of.
Its long in the tooth now at 70,000 but still looks good and performs even better. Did plugs and coils yesterday and regained power that been lost due to worn plugs and it’s love all over again. So to answer the question, no, I don’t want one vehicle to cover all the bases. Jack of all trades, master of none sort of thing.

For me the saying, "Jack of all trades and master of none", applies here.
If you have the space and the ability to afford two vehicles, I would do a performance dedicated one and a utilitarian one. I have this situation going on now with my 135i and C-HR. I also seem to have done the same with two wheels. I have my sport bikes and recently picked up a C650 Sport scooter. |

I love having multiple vehicles, and miss the heck out of my Grand Cherokee. Sold my GC for the M2C, and am currently saving for another, so I can get a boat. If I didn't want to have multiple cars, I'd get an SRT Jeep or a Trackhawk, or some other fast sporty SUV, and it would (almost) fill both gaps. I like being able to hop in a big comfy SUV to drive to work, or go pick stuff up from Lowes in, but also like the option to be able to take the M through the nice roads and have some fun. All depends on your personal needs though.

Thanks for the responses everyone!
Wife is definitely leaning towards having just one car per individual just for practicality (we live in a downtown area in a house with no garage, but relatively easy street parking within sight of the house.) I'm still pushing for two cars just so that I don't have to constantly baby or worry about everyday wear and tear from the dog, or just careless / accident-prone people. Does anyone have experience buying two cars at once? Curious if dealers provide add'l incentives for that kind of stuff. |

I'd definitely keep the Saab if it's in good shape, runs well, and you don't mind paying the insurance and a place to park it.

We have an M340i and an X3 m40i. The X3 is the wife's, and we use it to take the dogs around, and the M340i is my daily drive to work.
It's nice to have the SUV if I want to make a run to Home Depot or buy a large items that wont fit in a the car trunk. But while my Wife likes to drive the SUV, I prefer driving a car. A car that can do it all, probably wont do everything well... |

As the owner of an X3M I cannot trumpet it as the solution for everyone because it comes with the same ride quality as an M2 or M3 which isn't for everyone and despite how fast it can corner it's still not the same as driving a sports car fast, sitting lower to the ground. That said I have not missed my M2 even once since taking ownership of the X3M as it does everything remarkably well for my tastes. |

I literally just made the same exact move you are contemplating. Had a F80 M3 and traded it in for a 718 Cayman (manual of course) + an economical SUV still to be determined. Very happy with my decision so far.
I have always only had one car and if one car is the only option the M3 is hard to beat for all around performance and practicality. But, ultimately I wanted to try a two car setup with a true sports car and practical daily. |

Always best to have the two split. Weekend/sports car and an SUV. Thats how we do it. Also have a pickup truck...having those 3 vehicles, doesnt limit you anywhere.

Most households have one CUV/SUV and one sedan. You absolutely need the bigger car for those larger purchases at Costco, Home Depot and for road trips. The second vehicle can be something fun and impractical as a result.

And the third vehicle is a giant 3/4 ton pickup to haul really heavy things.
