I really hope they do release a M340i wagon in the future. I would replace mine with the wagon in a heartbeat.

It's the same argument.
They have a Wagon but they also offer an equivalent SUV. It's common knowledge that they will look at the wagon but leave with the SUV. It will be interesting to see what happens especially with RS6 there is an equivalent RS Q8. And Mercedes AMG E63 now the you can have either a GLE 63 or GLS 63. It will of course be watched by BMW with great interest.

In order to even get a seat at the table in that game, BMW would first need to do an M5 Touring. Audi and Mercedes already have the product, they are just certifying it for sale here. If BMW can’t find an M5 Touring market in Europe or ROW, they certainly aren’t going to be able support the model on NA sales alone.

Yes, a performance 3er wagon from BMW and the C63 T-Modell from M-B would spice up that segment. I think the 5er Touring would do well.
Hard to say it, but the Buick Regal TourX catches my eye. |

I'd be first in line at my local BMW dealer if a wagon came back to the US. We had a 2002 allroad, replaced it with a 2008 535xiT, replaced that with a 2015 X5 35d. Simply do not like the ponderous handling of an SUV but need the boot space for a busy, active family. The 3er is now big enough to handle our needs so we'd be happy to go that direction rather than a 5er. Diesel and manual would be the best but I am realistic to know that'll never happen.

Can't buy a manual 3er or 5er these days anyway, even in Europe, unless you want only 145 hp in your BMW.

Presumably BMW knows what it is doing as its sales have been climbing in the US. However, I think it may be shortsighted in this regard.
It may not sell a lot of station wagons in the US but its competitors do sell them and once someone gets in a company's car, the person usually sticks with that company's cars. So BMW may lose some sales to MB and Audi which initially is no big deal but they could also lose these customers forever. My thought is that BMW could sell them as an order only item. So dealerships don't need to stock slow moving station wagons. But...this is all a dream. I will wake up soon. |

When accountants take over your business, marketing gets cut normally. Most dealerships I have spoken with say that the BMW wagon buyer is most loyal. But I am guessing most wagon buyers buy their cars and keep them for long term as practical is practical. So some high ranking executive at BMW needs to over rule the accountants and say the wagon is a great marketing item...and then market them. Once you explain how wagons are practical and fun to drive a lot of people get it. Although the weird stigma will probably play on.

The best argument against offering a wagon stateside is that it requires importing a platform that potentially cannibalizes sales of USA produced BMW SUVs. Certainly enthusiasts will insist dedicated buyers are cross-shopping the Audi, Volvo and Mercedes variants, not an X1/2/3. |

I proved to myself I wouldn't buy a wagon during my last vehicle purchase. Noticing how extremely rarely I see wagons; even on this forum, shows me that I'm not alone.
Funny how all the people whom complain about BMW having too many models are mute when it comes to wagons that they likely wouldn't buy anyway.

BMW wagons just don't sell and I doubt they would even if they weren't restricted to having the basic powertrain.

Interestingly, the only reason Mercedes keeps the E-Wagon in the states is for two reasons.
1) E-Wagon owners are the wealthiest MB customers, more than S-Class owners. 2) E-Wagon owners are the most loyal customers to the MB brand. I know everyone says BMW should make an M5 wagon, but, I'd rather see an M3 wagon or even just a 340 wagon. It'd be cheaper, still large enough, and AWD will be offered but will also be exclusive model in its class with no competition (V60 T8 Polestar doesn't really count), if anything they could at least do a limited production run, but these are all just dreams |

BMW has never gotten the wagon formula right in the USA, IMO. People who want a wagon want car dynamics with SUV practicality. BMW always gives us the lowest performance variant of the day-- 323 and 325 only in e46, 328 only in e9x, and 4 cylinder automatic only in f3x.
People who care about dynamics don't want the slower version. Give us the bigger engines! Not that I'd buy a modern BMW either way, but I have now owned 3 BMW wagons and plan to import and e61 M5 wagon when they hit the 25 year old importable mark.

M-B E63s wagon, 603hp, 3.4s 0-60
Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo Turbo, 550hp, 3.6s 0-60 The high prices for these models, both new and used, point the way to higher current demand in the market for a performance wagon. The GLE63s is in reasonably high demand in the used market. Larger vehicle, but there are not many alternatives for performance wagon seekers. An M3 Touring and C63s T-Modell is what the market needs. |
