Ribbed rear wheel rims in F1
So far I've only seen the ribbed rims on the launch McLaren presumably incorporating the similar Merc system of keeping the rear tyres cooler at race temperatures. It'll be interesting to see how many makes will sport this mod also taking in smaller wheel nut apperature as seen on the SF1000 for additional heat escape from brakes.

Yup. There is a disc and calliper nestling in that enclosure.

For those interested, here's a photo of the brakes without the shroud. They manage to pack a surprising amount of stuff in there.
And the other photo shows the ribs in the Mercedes wheel rim if anyone hasn't seen them before. Here's a good article from 2018 on the topic: https://www.autosport.com/f1/news/13...st-controversy |

Brake tech in F1 is really quite amazing, there's so much that could be discussed.
Talking about these fins and dissipating heat reminded me of the evolution of brake discs themselves. The number of holes used in break discs has increased from 100 to 1200! Worth looking into if you guys are interested. |

This is not a thread-jack, just a short article on carbon ceramic brake disc failures on BMW's....the article states the carbon ceramic rotors are Brembo:
https://www.carsaddiction.com/articl...ceramic-brakes BMW OEM carbon ceramic front discs: $7,200 https://www.turnermotorsport.com/p-2...6-f06-m6-pair/ BMW OEM carbon ceramic rear discs: $6,900 https://www.turnermotorsport.com/p-2...6-f06-m6-pair/ It's over $14,000 + just for the disc (rotor) replacements, plus carbon ceramic brake pads, brake fluid, plus labor, etc.

+ Another thing with them is care needed in removing wheel. The wheel needs to be very slightly above ground in removing to take off the hub upright as if edge catches the disc it could chip edge off rendering it unserviceable. Last edited by M5Rick; 02-18-2020 at 05:13 AM.. |
