For a tactical blade a Microtech Socom fits the bill. If you want to get down and dirty (and are able to do so legally in your juristiction) you can check out the Microtech Halo III. That's an OTF automatic, not much for an all around knife, but great for defense.

Microtech's are really pricey but worth every penny.

Yeah for the OTF generally you need to be law enforcement or active duty military - check your local and state laws for carrying it. It's considered a switchblade basically.

well in maryland its illegal to have, sell, or carry. Im going to get one anyway lol. I realized these are the same switchblades Jack Bauer uses in 24. Ill probably go with the Ultratech. Love that blades tip.

Combat Elite 1G or 3G - I have both. Highly recommend them. It's the only blade I'll carry right now. Have picked into many a mobile home with them and they hold an edge rather well. The blade finish has held up a lot better than I thought it would. Using the blade to pry things is fairly sturdy - better than most folding blades, for sure.

My next knife will be a Strider AR in OD Green.

Buck licensed with Strider a few years ago and made some nice cheaper knives. I've played with a few of them and saw one give a guy who did not know what he was doing seven stiches. I'm not sure if they are still making them - you can find them online, however.

http://www.knivesplus.com/BUCK-KNIVE...-TACTICAL.HTML

Finally, I love Emerson knives. I've owned three CQC-7's (CQC-7A) over the years. Two were made by Benchmade - who I feel is slipping on their quality control these days. I've not owned one with the "wave" feature so I cannot tell you if it works well or just pokes a hole in your jeans. I was very close to buying a Commander from him when I fell into the Combat Elite deals.

Good luck with whatever you purchase. I'm a bit of a knife lover but tend to use the crap out of them having to replace every two to three years. Well, that's what I tell my wife when I buy a new one.

*edit -- I've played with MOD knives and do not like them. I've also played with Microtech and have the same opinion. They are fun to play around with. A guy I work with would slap me in the ear if he heard me say that. He's die-hard Microtech. I just feel like the thing is going to break or that my hand will slip under hard use and I'll end up getting stiches. To each their own.
