Talking OMFG Maybe A Brilliant Idea To Get Iphone 3G!!!

after seeing my friend get the new iphone 3g today (att) and i came home i just thought of something. the iphone has a warranty and my friend is on the att network (new contract).

so what if he just says his phone got stolen (realistically, i keep it). will he just have to pay another $200 for the phone and att will give him a new sim card, number, etc to get him setup again?

if this works i am thinking i pay my friend $200 for the new phone and like a $100 thank you.

what do you guys think? jebus, please tell me this can be doable .

Yes, it is doable. Like having a friend set fire to your house while you are away to collect on the insurance... unethical and unlawful, but doable...

i heard the ATT will deactivate the phone and it won't work even you put different sim card in. If you can think of that, ATT / Apple can think of this fraud too

The warranty probably covers damage, or defects for a year... not loss or theft.

I have the first Gen iPhone, and ATT doesn't offer a warranty on the iPhone and a lot of other smart phones. So if you lose it, drop it and break it, brick it (on an unlock), or have it "stolen" then you just have to pay the full price for a new one. Believe me, if there was a $5 a month warranty on the iPhones covering damage/loss, then people would be convienantly losing them every day .

*Plus when you "lose" a phone or it gets "stolen" then you need to file a police report and go through that hassle.

mr. steak: when you say full price, do you mean price of the phone $200 for full price of $400?

hm i was thinking about this too, but att can't send a signal to the phone to disable it. i mean the phone is already locked to att and the phone will be off until the unlock is released.

i mean i could be wrong but i don't think att will have satellite locking on every iphone they sell based on their production number, etc.

you guys remember high school/college right the shit was all about the newest nextel like the 950i, etc? some people went through the trouble of even stealing the phone and sold it to other students and nothing happened when they unlocked it and put the phone to use.

Whatever you paid for it originally. If you lost it or it was "stolen" then you just have to buy another one as if it were your first. If you plan on using it in other countries, I'd look into getting one from Europe or whatever thats already unlocked. Then again... I only followed the jailbreaks on the first gen iPhone, so I don't know much about the 3G yet. (May upgrade to it this winter.)

Hah, and don't listen to people talking about ethics... cell phones and contracts and all that bullshit are like the wild west, you can play by the rules, or do what you have to do to get what you need. There are a lot of bullshit rules, and ridicilous fees, so doing something unethical to bypass some of that bullshit is all part of the game.

guys guys chill, i only thought of this idea cause everyone in school was doing it back in the days. seriously you guys never experienced the whole nextel crave back in the day?

and i have a coupe not conv. i don't want iphone on att network $70+ month is ridiculous friend actually says its $100+ including taxes, govt fees, etc. no need for this when i want to unlock along the rest of the world anxiously waiting for dev team.

anyhow i just got off the phone with a friend and it is not doable. if the phone is lost or stolen he would have to pay the full price of $499 (no contract price soon to be available).

he did tell me though along with other friends with iphones this should work:

Solution 2:
have a friend (who wants to keep his iphone) upgrade to 3g version. he signs, pays, etc and gets the iphone 3g. now since the old iphone is still his (just needs to insert an att sim card) have him remove the sim card from the 3g he got and put it back in his iphone and it works (the sim card is from his original iphone so same number, etc). so now he has a 3g with no contract and is still using his old iphone like he was.

this is how people are selling iphones on ebay as well. they upgrade, keep their old phone, and sell the new ones.

so the question is who here is eligable for 3g upgrade and wants to keep their iphone? i will pay the upgrade, phone, etc plus tip.
