Wife's car hit while parked, will insurance rate to go up?
Wife's 128i got hit on both sides while parked on the front fender and bumper, I was wondering if my rates will go up if I make a claim? I have Geico.
Thanks! |

In the UK, your rate goes up even if you have a non-fault accident & all costs are recovered from third party.
I read somewhere it's because if you get into a non-fault accident, you are then statistically more likely to be involved in an accident where you are at fault down the line. I believe in your case you don't know who hit your wifes car? In which case yes your rate will certainly go up as your insurance company will be paying. |

In this case, YES your premium will go up. It doesn't matter if its your fault or a not at fault - a claim is a claim. Obviously a not at fault claim is less significant than an at fault, but you will see an increase in your premium. Be ready to change insurance provider upon your next renewal. Ask how I know. I now have full dash cams and extended batteries for shit like this. |

When you shop for insurance the companies don't see who caused the accident, just that there was one. In my opinion its a broken system |

Get a quote from a body shop, ask for the cash rate, and if it's not wildly more than your deductible, just pay for it yourself. Cash rates at body shops can be much lower than what they'd bill an insurance company.

If you have been with GEICO for a while, you may have accident forgiveness. But even if you do, you probably want to compare the cost of the repair out of your pocket with saving the accident forgiveness for a more important accident. |

this doesn't apply everywhere. My cash rate is higher than insurance rate, as insurance companies have established rates that are way too low. The only reason we honor those rates is because they send us volume of work. Cash job is 1 time deal, and owners are usually a lot more picky when they are paying for the repairs themselves. Not much incentive to do the job cheaper for cash customers.

A discussion with your insurance company is definitely in order here. I would lean towards comprehensive as your car was not in motion at the time. You were not operating the vehicle. And therefore it was outside of your control.
I would get a police report filed too. This will bolster your case even more as your insurance company will probably ask if you've done this if they haven't done so already. |

you can wipe your ass with a mechanical coverage contract on cars like an m3....theyll def make you just wish you paid out of pocket for a repair than the warranty when all the dust settles...not bashing you....but the amount of hoops you need to jump through for something u paid a hefty premium for its just bs nowadays...
OT....its almost impossible to avoid insurance rate fluctuations... a tree could fall on your car tomorrow and increase both your home and auto insurance if under the same company.....we pay to insure all; remember there is only one pot of money. i guess im salty...because shopping for car insurance is such a painful process. |

If they do end up raising your rates, you should shop for a new insurance company fater three years. GEICO looks at a trailing five year history while most other companies look at only three.
I had a $35k claim with GEICO that shockingly did not raise my rates very much. When I hit a deer about a year later ($3k claim), my rate went through the roof. They actually said it was not that the claim was large, it was that they were close together, putting me in a high-frequency risk bucket. Had I not had the second claim, my rate wouldn't have gone up much at all. That said, the second the first accident turned three years old, I switched insurance companies as they only recognized the $3k claim.

Rate shouldn't go up If your car was hit when parked. Rate only goes up If you're at fault. At least with my insurance. They are cool so far.

I had a car parked in a lot some years back. Came back out to find it diagonal, a spot over from where I left it, and crushed driver rear.
Filed as COMP and only out of pocket for my deductible. No rate hike. State Farm in Atlanta area. |

This has been my process as well. NEVER call your insurance company, even if it's just to ask them if something's covered.
