BMW and Daimler in Talks to Potentially Co-Develop Vehicle Platforms
Via Autonews:
March 15, 2019 FRANKFURT -- BMW and Mercedes-Benz owner Daimler are in talks to cooperate in developing vehicle platforms for electric cars in a step that could save each automaker at least 7 billion euros ($7.91 billion), Sueddeutsche Zeitung and Auto Bild reported. The two companies already have a joint procurement program and recently extended their cooperation to include development of advanced driver assistance systems and mobility services. Auto Bild said Daimler and BMW are in talks over whether to share engineering costs for compact and midsize cars, which are designed to be "electric first," but also have the capability of using conventional powertrains. BMW and Daimler would save 7 billion euros each, over a period of seven years, the magazine said. Sueddeutsche Zeitung said the companies are seeking more than 7 billion euros in potential savings, and that if larger vehicles were included in the project, savings could be higher. The talks over whether to cooperate on vehicle platforms could still fall apart, Sueddeutsche and Auto Bild said. Both automakers have acknowledged cooperation talks which include sharing engineering costs for driverless cars, but BMW and Daimler have repeatedly declined to comment on whether their cooperation could include entire vehicle platforms. BMW's finance chief said in November he was open to deeper collaboration with Daimler but said it was difficult to identify win-win opportunities in the area of shared vehicle platforms. BMW and Daimler declined to comment.

As long as the M4 doesn't end up weighing 4100 lbs like the C63 Coupe then that would be great!

Maybe the LA Kings and San Jose Sharks can merge hockey teams and while we're at it let's have cats and dogs mating! Get the fuck out of here with this bullshit. Real headline should read......"Car manufacturers worried about profit loss merge with their enemies to control losses".

I personally don't like this. Talk about brand dilution. I understand this is becoming the norm in this industry (see Toyota Supra), but for crying out loud, this is the exact opposite of healthy competition. Remember that term?
I understand how this is beneficial for driving assistance tech, because it's just technology, which has nothing to do with what driving enthusiasts and car lovers care about. However, if this is going to result in the rest of the car being one in the same, then I say . Damn you, bean counters, damn all of you.

edit Driver assistance technology i feel should be shared across all platforms and makes this way it can be much more effective my loaner 2019 x5 almost got me rear ended because someone decided to poke there car out in an intersection while i was going straight which sent my x5 into a full on hard brake scenario. The other guy looked at me like wtf i wasnt gonna cut yoy off kinda look lolll... |

Wait does them mean we get an M-AMG track day for $750?
I think a few manufacturers would sh*t 10w 30 if BMW and MB had a baby. It would be fair to say the market would get turn upside down. |

We are reaching a point of vehicular saturation. Specs are gonna start to bottom out in terms of performance. We are reaching that threshold before we begin to get to exotic numbers.
It appears to be a new approach to car making is commencing... Start tuned? |

I would take this with a grain of salt for now. This would be pretty far down the road when stuff like inductive wireless charging for autos is somewhat standardized and there would be obvious cost savings on that sort of shared technology (like Qi for cell phones). The joint venture for autonomous vehicles is similar to this, with an optimized road infrastructure for autonomous cars more likely in the distant future.
BMW and Toyota/Lexus will probably share engineering/manufacturing on more than just the supra. Similar to Mercedes with Nissan/Infiniti and I'm not 100% if Renault is involved with them. This could be another potential conflict. Two very large corporations working together could have a lot of weight/influence in not only the German, but international governments. I think it is smart to be open to talks, but likely there will be too many obstacles or conflict of interest... in my opinion. |
