Would you buy a Volvo with this speed limit built in? Assuming there is an override button when turning off TC? Though I would want TC above 112 MPH.

99.9% of people should not exceed 112mph imo. What driving course did they take to make it safe to drive 112+ on public roads?

Not surprised to see this coming from Volvo. And i actually quite admire them for sticking with their long-held corporate principles, even controversially.

But say insurers will cut the premium in half if one would, I'm sure lots of people wouldn't hesitate to go for this option.
I mean only Germany and the Isle of Man allow these speeds on open roads, and the rest of the world has a speed limit of at least 20mhp lower.
And most volvo's arent exactly trackworthy so for that you won't need it.
In a lot of countries doing that speed would result in instantly loosing your drivers license so if I wasn't this close to germany, I wouldn't mind tbh.
In the past I've had cars that even couldn't reach that speed

I think top gear once did a crash test at ~120mph against a concrete block (what would be similar like hitting a overpass pylon or a stationairy semi), and if you look at that footage you can see that parts like the gas tank implode on itself just from decelleration.
Your organs like liver and spleen would do the same, and turn into instant mush.
Best not to think about that when going 175mph on the autobahn as that seems cars doing 120 seem like standing still

It's not what course the diver got, but also all other road users. If you drive on a normal road, you shouldn't have to expect other drivers doing that speed.
Unless in germany on the unlimited stretches, and driving there can be fantastic, as the other road users are aware that those speeds are used, and they keep strickt lane discipline etc (the germans at least). The cars you have to watch out for are the foreigners, especially polish etc truck drivers. (remember, the truck always wins....)
Being cut off at 120 testing your abs at that speed is a really strange feeling.

For the vast bulk of people - I don't see this being an issue or something even worth mentioning.

Let's face it, there is no reason to be going over 80-90mph on any road, ever, with exception of some in Germany, if you are driving a typical family sedan or SUV - the kind of cars that Volvo produces.

I don't even really have an issue with something like this on sport[y] sedans and coupes like the BMW non-M models, either. That is a pretty reasonable speed limit and no one on public roads is ever going to need to exceed it.

As long as there is an override in case you do need some speed , but I doubt anyone buying a volvo would even notice

Yes I saw in the article that JDM are limited to 112. I assume folks who import them remove the limiter.

There are Volvo's in Germany and some models are sporty would benefit to have this removed.

I'm sure someone will figure out how to override it.

That being said, I'm in agreeance at least in the US market. Theres no reason someone needs to drive over 100MPH, in a Volvo no less, on any public roadway here.

If the highway is empty at 3 am it's a fun thing to try. It's not like people are driving at those speed for more than 2 seconds anyways.

I don't have a problem as I think 112 is still a reasonably high limit. I do worry about makers/government creeping it lower and lower though. Whats the top speed limit in the US? 75 mph? I'm surprised limiters are not already set at 90 mph.

Could be 'win win' - prevent maniacs from actually hurting people and encourage others to just peg the car the entire time so they can keep handing out the speeding tickets. I know I drive ~85-90 with my car... if flooring it was 95 I'd be tempted to just keep my foot down rather than trying to regulate it.

If there is no manual override though they can go **** themselves.

For those saying "no one needs to go over 112mph", you're missing the point. It's a slippery slope to completely locked down cars that are GPS limited to the speed limit, etc. There's no reason for an automaker to do this, it doesn't benefit them in any way other than another 5 second safety tagline.

At least in the US, people don't want to be restricted.

Volvo seems to think differently, and the last few years they've been pretty succesful. Its still a fairly small manufacturer but they've seen their market share grow faster in the last few years than say.. bmw (which, of course also limits their cars, but at 250kph).

This. It wont affect sales for Volvo, as their target demographic will never go over 100mph.

BMW limits their US models to three V-Max's... 210 kph(130 mph), 250 kph(150 mph) and ///M cars to 270 kph (166 mph).

Actually four, IF you count the ///M Drivers package option which gets your the two day ///M school and the certificate which lets your dealer flash the higher speed limiter to 280 kph(173 mph).


For non M cars IF your car has the Sport option(ZMP or ZSP) you also get option #840 "Increased top speed limiter". This bumps the car's V-Max from 210 to 250 kph.

As for Volvo setting a 112 mph speed limiter on their cars I think this is for two reasons. One, that is one of the lowest speed ratings for car tires... so they could save money on each car build. And Two... Doesn't Vovlo want no one to die in their cars by 2020 ? Or something soon? Maybe this would help them achieve their target goal. ???

They've always been known for safety, but they've seen sales increase because they actually started building decent cars that can compete in their segments.

And they did that by making sensible cars. They are very big in hybrid cars (for a long time now), downsized engines that still have good power/fuel efficiency ratio's, and are very advanced in autonomous driving and active safety systems.
This is just another 'sensible' feature.
Mind you, the american market is quite a small market for volvo; in europe they sell over 3 times as much. Hell, even in china volvo now sells more cars than in the US.

They make sensible, reliable and practical cars. So I guess in some ways they're more a competition for lexus and such than for the german luxury brands.
