Do you keep your cars long term?

I almost always buy used since I feel I can get more for my money. Let someone other sucker pay down the depreciation. I also like to try to keep my cars for a few years and not change them up too often. I have been failing at this. I usually make it 3 years and then find something newer to buy. So do you generally keep your cars past 4 years? What mileage do you tend to start looking for something newer? I like to get to 100k but haven't made that in the past 4 cars and 11 years. It seems most think BMW's should be sold or turned in after lease or warranty is up. I plan on holding on to mine for a while. We'll see if I succeed.

I like to keep my cars until I run them into the ground. I have never leased. Just don't feel like I am renting my car for x years. I like to know that I own them and can do whatever I want without limitations.

I like to modify my cars so I purchase used as well. Got a great deal on my 335i three years ago and have been able to modify it nicely. I also DIY just about everything otherwise I'd be up to my nuts in labour costs over the years.
My motto in life is ballin on a budget. So far the car has been perfect, absolutely zero issues to speak of in the last 50,000 km. I plan to own the car to at least 160,000 km. I'd like to get to 200,000!

Some cars, not all, especially not my bimmers. I want the latest and greatest and I have a short attention span. I used to keep my cars 6+ years but I got sick of the maintenance. Now I get rid of them every 3 years. Keeps the warranty, paint, and models fresh. That's not to say I don't think keeping cars is a bad idea, it's an excellent idea. I have 2 other non-bimmers that I own and will run into the ground.

I don't think of cars as casually as smartphones, so I hold on to them long term. Both our cars are almost 7 and 8 years old now. I don't DIY, but both cars have been rock solid reliable (Toyota & BMW; seems to jive with the latest Consumer Reports ratings). Maintenance costs have been reasonable...nothing needed outside of routine maintenance. The bimmer is at 86k miles now and hope to take it to the ballpark of 150k before I replace it.

Yes and no. I bought a '66 Galaxie 7Litre convertible in 1984 and still have it and have no plans to sell it. I bought a '93 Cobra in '93, kept it for about twenty years and sold it. I bought a 2001 Lightning in 2001 and still have it with no plans to sell it. Other than those, I have bought and sold dozens of cars. So, yes and no.

Normally I keep car's that I buy outright for about 4 or 5 year's, sometimes shorter than that (shortest was 2 month's, but to be fair that car sucked ass). I normally get them to around 100-125k miles and then get rid of em and it's only because I get bored but as others have stated above I don't do DIY work on my car's (soooooo) I normally send it to the dealer and be done with it...but most likely with my 340 when the warranty is up I'll be getting rid of it.

It depends on how reliable the car has been and how much I like it.

I have had a few in the 8 to 12 year range and a few in the 3 to 4 year range.

Right now I have owned my cars 9, 4, 3, 2 and 2 years. The one I have had 9 years I will probably replace next spring when it is 14 years old and I have owned it 10 years - don't want to spend my time chasing rust. The one I have had 4 years I would love to sell - worst 4 years of car ownership ever - but my wife won't let me My E46 M3 I will keep for a long, long time and my F30 I bought new and will keep at least another 8 years - until it is 12 years old. My wifes new daily - who knows, depends and how she warms up to it.

Also, I have bought used and new equally for my daily drivers. Depends on the timing and spec of what I want and what is out there. My weekend cars have all been bought used.

I keep em long term, I daily’d an 89 Volvo 240 for twenty years then replaced it with a 09 Subaru Outback I still have and will drive into the ground. I also have a 62 VW that my brothers, father and I converted into a dune buggy back in 1970, I’ve owned it since the early 80’s and will pass it on to family when I kick the bucket. The 340 may be the exception, I absolutely love it but it seems I have developed a case of M fever and I may have to scratch that itch.

I keep them a looooooong time.

85 Saab Turbo... used... bought in 1993. Still got it. MGB V8... 1978 car I bought in 2002. Converted to v8 2 years ago.
2010 Range Rover full fat... bought used in 2015. Still have. Just bought the ZHP 340 cos 6 speeds are done. First and last brand new car I ever bought. Probably keep for years. Best BMW I've had. Had a 328 which I hated, then a 335.... but the 340 is just that much nicer in every way.

I like to research well and choose cars I know I'll hopefully want for a long time and buy new, take care of them and mod here and there as I go. My 135 is my DD not my nice weekend play car and have had it going on 9 years.

My DD (Lexus IS) was 2.5 yrs old when purchased and I've had it for 3.5 years. 2012 model.

I'll be in the market 3 years from now. By the time all is said and done I will have had it for 7 years. That will make it a 10 yr old car whose body style was released in 2006...will be quite outdated.

The only reason I'm waiting so long is because I'm in my mid-20s and would rather put money toward paying grad school loans, investing, etc.

In the future I see 4-5 yrs tops with one car.

Entirely depends on the car, but typically I don't keep them long. I like having nice things and my commute is 300 miles a week. I think the longest I've owned a car was six years (about 70,000 miles) and it only made it that long because I went back to school.

I've only had 4 BMWs, but they overlapped (owned 2 at a time).

BMW 1: Bought new, kept for 13 years, 125K miles, sold privately.
BMW 2: Bought new, kept for 6 years, 65K miles, sold privately (needed 3rd row for expanding family)
BMW 3: Bought used with 60K miles (rare model), kept 4 years, 115K, sold privately (change of job, wanted newer car)
BMW 4: Bought used with 3K miles, still own after 8 years, 82K miles.

I keep thinking I want a used, low mileage (under 10K) M2 (OG), but I really don't need one.

e36 m3 - 4 years
e46 m3 - 4 years
GTR - 3 years
FRS - 1 year
F30 335- 2 years
458 - 3 years+
F80 - just got it

usually I get bored after 3-4 years and switch it up.

Always buy used. The cost of my 458 ownership over the last year is equivalent to what some people are leasing a brand new M3CS for. Granted I don't have a warranty but that doesn't really matter to me.

I keep all my vehicles long term. Have bought 3 used "vehicles". One was a 94 Z28. Bought it used as I knew the owner. Bought it in '99 and sold it in 2014 with if I remember correctly 106,000 miles. The other two "vehicles" were used motorcycles. One was a 89 Ninja ZX750 which was my first bike. Sold that to a neighbor wanting to get back into motorcycles about a year or so later. I had a 87 FZR400 which was a track only bike. Never got around to running it on the track and it just sat. Sold that a few years ago to one of the workers I had over doing work on my house.

All other vehicles I've bought new and hold on to them a long time. Bought a 94 Z24 new and junked it in 06 because one of the head gaskets was blown. Bought a 06 Ford Focus ZX3 new. Kept driving that car as my daily even after buying my 13 135i until an encounter with Bambi did in the car. Insurance totaled out the car in 14 with 176k miles on the clock. Would have kept driving that car as it was the perfect beater.

Still have my 13 135i bought in 2014 new. Still have my 04 Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10R bought new and still looks showroom new. Still have my 09 Ducati 848 also looking showroom new. And recently got a 2019 Toyota C-HR new which I will drive till the wheels fall off.
