Annoyed by required cell phone OS updates
What's with these random required phone updates? Nothing more annoying when the phone gets a new update which literally changes the look of the phone menus. My Samsung Note9 since I bought it towards the end of the year already had 3 updates. Changing the look of the phone every time! For example like my text messaging screen, the weather updates, settings and everytime I have to redownload my home/background image. Do some of you cancel your updates or are these updates mandatory?

You can choose if you can. Just see if you really need it: what's included, how people like it (news, reviews). I've downloaded an immediate security update for my brand new phone but I hesitate about downloading a major system update pending. They promise "efficiency" but I absolutely mind the direction they go about spying after me and making decisions "for my good" as they expect me to be stupid compared to their "smart" software (which I find insulting).
The sole reason I had to get a new phone (well, I love it but my old one would absolutely do had it not stopped working in some places) was a system update I had downloaded carelessly and it was such a failure it killed the whole manufacturer, a world phone making leader before that (Apple's competitor). I don't want that again. But I reckon I probably can't stick to the system for those many years to come as applications will outdate depending on the system updates. Furthermore, the currently pending update will be succeeded by another, even more doubtful one (and it's only the last I can get, I believe). I'll update it one of these days. Perhaps: I still can't make myself do it. |

Because iOS updates NEVER cause any issues.
I say this as someone who has always had an iPhone. Better yes, but not free from problems by any means.

I bought a Note 9 the first week of December. I've had a few updates but nothing changes as far the look of the UI or menus as you've mentioned.
I will say that I am using a Samsung murdered out theme that makes everything black. Not sure if keeps the menu looking the same due to the theme. I worked in the cell industry for years and have used every platform that has been released since 2004. The Note 9 is hands down my favorite phone that I have carried. |

Which phone do you have? I purchased a Google Pixel when they first came out. Shipped with Android 7.x, updated once to 8.x, hated it, and reverted to the latest update for 7.x. Haven't had any issues since, or felt the need to update.
iOS makes it miserable to stop forcing updates, I just generally dislike modern Apple products. They really aren't that great and certainly not worth the price tag.

What a crazy idea that the manufacturer of the hardware tightly integrates with it's own software to have a better user experience?!

For all the IOS fans - let me ask you a question in the same way Apple would when it comes to updating my device:
Q: Is Android is better than IOS? A: [Yes] [Read more about how Android is better] [Ask me again later] Now, with that said, let me get on to some android bashing. Every iPhone is the same. Every update is only minor. This is great for simplify of user experience and great for tech support (if I'm talking someone through setting up bluetooth, I know where it is in the settings.) This is awful if you want to customize your phone; and it's a little bit awful for Apple, because there's very little reason for me to fork out for a new iPhone X when my iPhone 4S works just fine. Every Android is different. It's up to the hardware manufacturer to customize Android, so they move menus around - and when google release updates, it's a significant change - which means "yay, new features" but "argh, I have to set everything up again." The good news is with Android (generally speaking) you have the option of "fuck off and never remind me to update again", which you don't on iPhone. Also, while every phone being different is annoying for tech support and iPhone fans; it's generally a non-issue for Android owners, because it doesn't matter that your phone is different from someone else's - it's your phone, and you know how to use it. Same as driving a BMW - my wife says the indicator stalk is on the wrong side in my car... I say it's on the wrong side in everybody else's cars. Last edited by xQx; 02-13-2019 at 08:39 PM.. |
