Will any US states ever delimit speeds on interstates?
A lot of states have been increasing speed limits on interstates for years now. Nine states are currently considering increasing speed limits as seen below.

Drivers in this country are soooo bad and keep getting worse, as well as more distracted (clearly I'm not talking about the people on this forum with their catlike reflexes and Senna-like skills). What kind of shit show would a speed-derestricted highway be?

That ship has sailed. We would need extreme changes to driver’s education, far stricter application of laws / rules of the road overall and higher taxes to maintain the roadways. There may be a few roads that allow no speed limits, particularly in remote areas, but it’s not going to happen on a wide scale. If anything I think there is a better chance of lower speed limits mandated in the U.S. to conserve fuel, but even that will be difficult with all the sprawl. Too many other priorities to address.

Yep, too difficult for the average American to understand the concept as it is.
Stay to the right except to pass, exit and entrance to it ONLY from the right. Absolutely NO left turns. Oh, and minimum speeds must be followed as well. Never slow down prior the deceleration lane and acceleration lanes must be used fully.

Agreed with the points brought up above. Yesterday some idiot in a SUV decided to drift into my lane from a 2 lane left turn. I honk. She still keeps drifting into my lane. Eventually moving back over to her lane. Not more than another 25 feet, she does the same crap again. Again, I'm on my horn. Now she's straddling both lanes. Totally oblivious to everything around her. Pull up next to her and see her fussing with something on her lap. My guess is it's a damn cell phone.
The above is at low speeds. Imagine what would happen at much higher speeds. Licensing and how the typical American driver views driving is a total joke in this country. |

I suspect the road planners and engineers are anticipating high proportion of autonomous and semi autonomous vehicles, which allows more vehicles (tighter spacing) on existing roads, and thus reduces the need for expanding existing route capacity. If true, few new roads will be built other than for new developments/routes. Autobahn won’t be among them anyway; the preference will be for high speed rail I suspect.

It will never happen. Try traveling on an interstate at the speed limit or slightly faster, drivers camp out in the left lanes and are oblivious to traffic flow. I find it frustrating to drive distances because people are either ignoring their mirrors, driving too slow for the conditions or too aggressive. Imagine having virtually no speed limit and people using their phone, listening to music and marginal driving skills.

Would never happen. We can't even repair our current roads, never mind build new ones.

There needs to be a straight stretch of road from North Carolina to Cali for cars with certain hp only and every so often you have to stop because your engine will blow at top speeds and just take a little break have like a restaurant every 30miles there sit back and cruise at 120 all the way there

First things first the laws must change. Speeding well over the limit is viewed as a criminal offense in USA. Then driver education must change; there should be different liscense teirs; IE super license testing. Yah, I would pay a monthly premium to run on autobahn speeds.

There already is an Autobahn Country Club which has no speed limits. You're fooling yourself if you think they will make public roads at no speed limit.

As Italian guy driving sometimes in Germany too I have to say ironically germans are thinking about lowering speed limits up to 110km/70mph, no limits zone are already restricted to few routes mostly the limit is 130kmh/80mph or 80kmh/50mph in case of high traffic

Parallel with Autobahns is TUV. So many pieces of junk on the roads that will come apart at speed eliminate any possibility of an unlimited speed limit. To have a safe Autobahn you first must have safe cars.
Just look at the number of "How can I lower my car for no money" threads are in this forum. Until people treat driving as a responsibility rather than a right, it can't happen. |
